The Virginia Department of Corrections currently has opportunities for Nurse Practitioners at two of its locations: Sussex State Prison (in Waverly, Virginia) and Deerfield Correctional Center (in Capron, Virginia).

Both facilities treat male offenders with full-service healthcare. We treat patients with chronic conditions as well as trauma, mental illness and substance abuse issues. Deerfield Correctional Center also treats geriatric patients. Offenders are treated with respect and dignity.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school, licensed to practice in the State of Virginia as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Extensive knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities to include symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures
  • Knowledge of professional and ethical standards of practice and interventions appropriate for the assigned population
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team and to communicate effectively orally and in writing
