Background

Peters VA Medical Center (JJPVAMC) and the Hudson Valley Health Care System (HVHCS). BVMRF enhances the quality of care and health of Veterans through research and education activities. Location

The Registered Nurse – Research position is located at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center (JJP VAMC). JJP VAMC is affiliated with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (NYC), Columbia University, numerous Academic Nursing Programs, and the Hospital for Special Surgery. The medical center has a professional practice model and shared governance. It is located in the Northwest Bronx on a self-contained campus easily accessible by car (free parking for eligible employees) and public transportation.

Duties

• Facilitates recruitment to clinical trials by screening scheduled patients for basic eligibility criteria. Ensures patients are informed of available clinical trials.

• Provide direct patient care as part of a multidisciplinary team utilizing a base of knowledge and an understanding of the objectives of the protocol to provide continuity of care to patients throughout various stages of treatment on protocol and follow-up.

• Performs procedures within the scope of the JJP VAMC nursing practice (vital sign monitoring, specimen collection, serial blood drawing via venipuncture or venous and central access intravenous lines, fluid delivery, and assisting with medical procedures).

• Facilitates the informed consent process and evaluates patient eligibility for participation in a research study with the principal investigator.

• Documents study assessments, provides education and maintains communication with the research study participants and their families.

• Uses expert nursing judgment to maintain the integrity of the research protocol in accordance with federal regulation and good clinical practice (GCP) guidelines, and coordinates care to ensure the compliant conduct of the trial while maintaining patient safety.

• Reviews each new protocol with the principal investigator prior to approval by the peer review committee for feasibility and addresses questions or concerns to the appropriate personnel (Principal Investigator).

• Communicates effectively with all members of the research care team and with the Research Development throughout the study start up and closure process.

• Ensures data integrity by ensuring high quality source documentation is recorded within the electronic medical record and any other research related documents.

Education and Experience

• Registered nurse (RN) from accredited institution.
• A minimum of l years of research experience a plus.
• Previous experience with clinical trials desired.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

• English Language Proficiency
• Bachelor’s Degree (BSN) from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE
• Possess a current unrestricted RN license
• Must have a current certification in BLS

Preferred Qualifications

· Clinical research experience 1 years preferred.

Physical Requirements

The physical requirements and activities that are required to perform the essential functions of the position include, but may not be limited to, as follows: Must be able to occasionally lift, pull and push a minimum of 20 lbs., stand for extended periods of time, sit for extended periods of time, squat, kneel, and regularly use fingers and hands for computer work.

Salary and Benefits

$89,000- $103,000 depending on qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.

• Candidates should expect to be placed under a 30-day probationary period beginning on the first day of employment.
• BVMRF employees must obtain a Without Compensation Appointment (WOC) at the James J. Peters VAMC and/or at the VA Hudson Valley Health Care System. This appointment requires a federal background check which is conducted upon hire.
