Position Summary: The Educational Advocate will assist the Senior Educational Advocate in
coordinating regional programming for the Southwest Migrant Educational Program. This will
include the interdisciplinary Migrant-STEAM Academy, SMYLI, Civic and other activities. The
Educational Advocate will serve as a liaison to increase academic achievement of migrant
students. The Educational Advocate will collaborate with applicable educational agencies to
deliver services to Migrant parents and children birth -21. This position will provide advocacy
and support to migrant families, with efforts focused in student academic success and
communication. The Advocate will facilitate communication between the school staff, migrant
students and their parents/guardians regarding local, regional and state opportunities available
to support students with graduation.
Qualifications: This position requires a professional with strong organization and
interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with others.
1. Bachelor’s degree or a minimum of 4 years equivalent experience working with migrant youth
completing graduation requirements and post-secondary goals.
2. Strong bilingual language skills; both written and oral communication in Spanish and English
is required.
3. Experience working with Migrant, homeless and ELL families.
4. Demonstrate competency in working with students from diverse cultures.
5. Proficient knowledge of computers, software, and internet.
6. Experience in program development, implementation & evaluation.
7. Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to motivate diverse groups of people.
8. Knowledge of best instructional practices for ELL students
9. Team player with strong interpersonal skills
10. Experience collaborating with community agencies and coordinating resources related to
health and social services and Local Education Agencies.
11. Detailed organizational skills required. Ability to meet deadlines, maintain records, complete
required reports, and maintain confidentiality.
12. Able to build a flexible schedule that includes working with families in the evenings and on
weekends (as needed).
13. Valid Driver’s license is a condition of continued employment. (complete mandated ASU
van/vehicle training)
14. Ability to treat others with respect, civility, and courtesy and to work honestly, effectively,
and collegiality with employees, students, and the community. This includes the ability to
use appropriate conflict management skills to effectively manage any disagreement that
might arise or to bring the disagreement to management for assistance in productive
resolution when the situation requires.
Specific Job Duties (Essential Functions and Responsibilities)
1. Collaborate with essential partners; (teachers, ASU faculty, SEA program leaders) to assist
in the coordination of Migrant- STEAM Academy, SMYLI, Civic and other MEP activities.
This will include organization, promotion and delivering above programs successfully.
2. Deliver Services to migrant parents and children ages birth -21 that includes advocating
for academic success and aiding in spoken and written communication.
3. Programs, services and activities are planned, developed, implemented and evaluated to
ensure they meet stated objectives.
4. Reports reflecting all activities, attendance, and participation are completed regularly
5. Frequent communication with State Education Agency (SEA) other MEP Region
representatives and SEA to plan, develop and implement the SMYLI, Migrant-STEM
Academy and Civics activities
6. Frequent communication with districts to develop, implement and evaluate instructional
support to improve migrant student achievement.
7. Coordinate with other educational programs, and agencies to deliver coordinated, high
quality services.
8. Submit all data shared between regions and schools through a secure server.
9. Maintain regularly scheduled communication with the Senior Educational Advocate and
other MEP staff.
10. Create a monthly newsletter to highlight SWRMEP activities.
11. Serve as a liaison between the MEP, ASU, schools, students, parents, and community to
advocate for migrant families.
12. Assist in the design, implement, and evaluate trainings for diverse audience such as
migrant parents, school personnel, MEP staff and community.
13. Assist with translation and/or communication using second language skills when
possible.
14. Assist to ensure students are on track with their high school credits, attending classes,
and meeting their ICAP goals. Schedule meetings with the students and counselors as
needed to discuss student’s educational needs.
15. Collaborate with recruiters and MEP staff to support all MEP activities, as well as
identification and recruitment as needed.
Additional Responsibilities:
1. Prepare written reports and record data neat and accurately
2. Meet all deadlines
3. Fulfill daily responsibilities while working toward reaching long term objectives
4. Organize and assist in facilitating MEP special events
5. Other duties as assigned
COMPENSATION/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and benefits are determined by the Migrant Director on an annually. The individual employee's
notice of assignment or contract will stipulate the salary, number of contracted days (245), applicable
benefits and position assignment of the employee.
