The ACCESS Program, Ashland University’s intensive English program, coaches international students in the development of their English language skills using a communicative, holistic approach. At this time, the program requires an adjunct instructor for its upcoming summer semester.
Instructors should possess a degree in TESOL or a closely related field (or be in the final stages of completing a degree). They should also have substantial experience living abroad as well as some experience studying a foreign language.
Instructors will be responsible to use the communicative approach to teach lessons that encourage student self-efficacy. Lessons should be student-centered, thus minimizing teacher talk time and promoting discovery learning. In the ACCESS Program, instructors act as coaches in a community of shared learning.
Careful, customized preparation of learning activities and materials for students’ individual and collective needs is of the utmost importance for ACCESS instructors. Scoring is done holistically against standardized rubrics and calibrated samples.
Ideal candidates should understand the theoretical basis of the approaches and methodologies mentioned above, or they should be open to adopting it as their teaching philosophy while in the program. All instructors will receive mentoring and should be open to being advised in the program's teaching techniques.
In addition, ACCESS instructors need to be very gentle and extremely patient when working with our students and their families from other cultures. They should be able to see situations from other people’s points of view and to show respect for people whose perspectives they may not agree with.
Listening and Speaking classes run from 1:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday on the main campus of Ashland University in beautiful Ashland, Ohio.
