Job Description

Wiley University is seeking an Instructor of English. The Instructor of English is a full-time position responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in English, literature, co-requisite English courses, conducting scholarly research, and engaging in service activities within the general education and English departments and the university community. The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for teaching, a commitment to scholarly inquiry, and a willingness to contribute to the academic and intellectual life of the university. The candidate will also spearhead all writing labs or co-requisite English courses to provide supplemental assistance in English courses. The Instructor of English reports to the Dean of Education and Sciences and works closely with faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders to advance the department's mission and goals.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Develop and deliver undergraduate English courses, including co-requisite English and writing lab courses, designed to enhance students' reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.
  • Utilize innovative pedagogical approaches, technology-enhanced learning tools, and active learning strategies to engage diverse student populations effectively.
  • Provide constructive feedback on student writing assignments, essays, and research papers to promote academic growth and improvement.
  • Design and develop curriculum materials, syllabi, assignments, and assessments for co-requisite English and writing lab courses, ensuring alignment with departmental learning objectives, accreditation standards, and best practices in writing instruction.
  • Integrate writing process strategies, rhetorical principles, and grammar instruction into course content to support students' development as proficient writers and communicators.
  • Oversee the operation and management of the writing lab, providing guidance, support, and resources to writing tutors and peer mentors who assist students with writing assignments, research projects, thesis preparation, and academic papers.
  • Develop training programs, workshops, and professional development opportunities for writing lab staff to enhance their tutoring skills, knowledge of writing pedagogy, and proficiency in providing effective feedback to students.
  • Offer individualized academic support and mentoring to students enrolled in co-requisite English and writing lab courses, including those with diverse learning needs, language backgrounds, and writing abilities.
  • Facilitate student workshops, study groups, and peer review sessions to foster collaborative learning environments and peer-to-peer support networks.
  • Collaborate with campus support services, such as tutoring centers, academic advising, and student success programs, to provide comprehensive academic support to students.
  • Engage in scholarly activities, research projects, and professional development opportunities related to composition studies, writing center administration, and English education.
  • Stay current with developments in the field of composition and rhetoric through participation in conferences, seminars, and professional organizations.
  • Contribute to the scholarly literature through publications, presentations, and collaborative research endeavors.

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in English, Composition and Rhetoric, Applied Linguistics, or a related field from an accredited institution. Demonstrated expertise in composition pedagogy, writing center theory, and writing program administration. Experience teaching English composition, writing-intensive courses, or developmental writing courses at the college or university level. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and writing lab staff. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, curriculum development, and student support services.
