What you will do:

  • Proven ability to effectively manage technical and support staff in a laboratory setting.
  • Coordinates and directs daily operations including decision-making, responses to problems, identifying errors and taking corrective action. Demonstrates managerial and technical expertise. Provides direct supervision of non-technical staff and operational supervision of technical staff in cooperation with technical supervisor, including scheduling, counseling, and disciplinary action.

  • Establishes effective working relationships with the Medical Staff and other departments/services.
  • Monitors test results performed by departmental employees in order to ensure test validity.
  • Maintains current knowledge of laboratory practices and ensures that the laboratory is functioning in accordance with Federal, State, and local regulations. Ensures that policies and procedures are in compliance with hospital standards and standards of accrediting agencies.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures, consistent with market consolidation activities and philosophies that guide and support the provision of clinical laboratory services.
  • Recommends the sufficient number of qualified and competent persons necessary to provide appropriate laboratory services. Adheres to proper resource allocation and coordination. Controls departmental supply expense.
  • Determines the qualifications and competence of clinical laboratory personnel. Selects qualified applicants for employment. Coordinates continuing education and competency assessments for all clinical laboratory personnel. Performs or coordinates general lab orientation for all new employees.
  • Continually assesses and improves the performance of the clinical laboratory at the site level and within the market operation. Serves as a resource for staff. Performs performance appraisals, sets goals and monitors progress. Shares/manages daily workload as needed. Uses time wisely. Delegates tasks and plans for succession. Demonstrates servant leadership and develops a transformational culture.
  • Addresses department efficiencies from both a facility and a market perspective. Balances consolidation opportunities with facility-specific service needs. Remains focused on the effectiveness of the entire operation. Motivates and educates staff to challenge traditional operational methods and processes.
  • Demonstrates innovation and creativity. Responds to changes in clinical laboratory medicine. Maintains and cultivates effective communication with laboratory leadership, staff, pathologists and other healthcare providers. Respects patient confidentiality.   • Prepares annual operating and capital budgets; operates department within the approved budgets.
  • Ensures that staffing levels are appropriate for services provided. Regularly reviews department productivity reports to ensure staffing levels are at benchmark.
  • Maintains proper control of all Firelands’ assets within area of accountability.
  • Contributes to the long-range planning of the department in conjunction with direct reports and medical director.
  • Monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of laboratory services provided, and takes appropriate action based on findings.
  • Maintains an ongoing strategy to improve patient satisfaction and customer service in accordance with hospital standards.
  • Consistently works to enhance existing services and identify new service opportunities.
  • Resolves any inter and/or intra-department situations which may arise in the performance of department functions.
  • Selects, trains, directs, evaluates, and when necessary, counsels or discharges members of the laboratory staff. Provides guidance in the selection of personnel that meet the organizational values of ACE.

  • Maintains visibility and accessibility to all staff for all shifts and uses a variety of methods to keep staff informed and engaged. Rounds regularly both inside the lab and throughout the organization to identify opportunities for improvement and foster strong collaborative relationships.
  • Aligns departmental goals and strategic initiatives with the organizations mission and strategic objectives
  • Ensures that performance evaluations for each staff member are completed accurately and timely according to HR policies and procedures.
  • Evaluates the operations of the department through annual preparation of accomplishments and goals. Ensures a safe environment exists for patients and staff through timely reporting and resolution of unsafe conditions.
  • Develops and secures approval of short-and long-range goals for the department.
  • Evaluates purchase, rental or lease of new or replacement equipment and assists in negotiation of said equipment.
  • Keeps abreast of current healthcare trends and practices; maintains and enhances expertise through appropriate educational experiences.
  • Carries out special projects, performs other duties and accepts any responsibility deemed appropriate or beneficial by the VP, Operations.
  • Demonstrates Service Excellence and ACE.

What you will need:

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist or equivalent Allied Health degree preferred. Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent to include MT, MLS, CLS, PA preferred. Master’s degree preferred. Three to five years leadership experience required, demonstrating initiative, motivation, and results.
  • State of Ohio motor vehicle operator’s license. Employee must provide proof of personal automobile liability insurance coverage upon request.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and supervise diverse work team.
  • Ability to work in an environment that is fast-paced and requires multi-tasking.
  • Ability to read and write small letters and numbers.
  • Ability to perform complex arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form with management, co-workers, patients, and members of the general public.
  • Punctual attendance at assigned work location is required.
  • Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner and maintain an accident free work place, including ability to demonstrate a working knowledge of Medical Center emergency codes.
  • Ability to comply with OSHA regulations and CDC standard and transmission-based precaution recommendations and to utilize proper personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to comply with provisions of applicable S.D.S. forms.
  • Successful completion of a one hundred-eighty (180) day probationary period.
