Behavior Health Engagement Specialist

$52,103 - $61,708

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS The work involves assessment and referral for case management services as well as providing training, dissemination of information, consultation and resources related to the behavior management of clients in the Mental Health/Addiction Recovery Services Clinic. Work is performed under the supervision of the Director of Community Services or designee. Does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK (Illustrative only)

  • Assists and promotes the identification of clients with behavioral health needs who may benefit from case management;
  • Coordinates appropriate resources to facilitate and ensure client progress through the continuum of care;
  • Develops supportive professional relationships with clients, families and support system and builds professional relationships among community resources to promote client recovery and health;
  • Explains and describes the Behavioral Health Engagement Specialist role and its benefits to clients, their families and support system;
  • Provides crisis intervention and emotional support to clients when appropriate;
  • Completes a comprehensive assessment of behavioral, social, physical health and other needs and utilizes clinical decision making in formulating a summary and recommendations;
  • Establishes, maintains, and promotes positive working relationships with internal and external customers in support of clinical goals and objectives;
  • Maintains information on community and health resources which can be utilized during care and subsequent to discharge from services;
  • Conducts individual, group and family support and/or educational sessions as appropriate;
  • Maintains accurate and updated information in each clients EMR system in accordance with substance use and mental health specific requirements and standards;
  • Demonstrates and applies the knowledge of the principals of comprehensive community-based, family-centered, developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive case management services;
  • Performs other duties specified by the manager or designee.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish a rapport with clients from diverse backgrounds; Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively collaborate with the treatment team and document client progress; empathy, compassion, and non-judgmental attitude towards individuals seeking metal health support; ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with the utmost professionalism and discretion; knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and the ability to remain calm in high-stress situations; flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and willingness to work collaboratively in a team-orientated environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; AND

(a) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents with a Bachelor’s degree or higher, in Human Services, Social Work or related field, AND one (1) year of full-time work experience, or its part-time equivalent, providing case management/care management working directly with clients with mental health/substance use, in a behavioral health setting; OR

(b) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents with a Bachelor’s degree, AND two (2) years of full-time work experience, or its part-time equivalent, providing case management/care management working directly with clients with mental health/substance use, in a behavioral health setting; OR

(c) An equivalent combination of training and experience as outlined in (a) and (b) above.

NOTE: For purposes of qualifying for this title, “human services field” or “social work field” include psychology, nursing, education, counseling, community mental health, or child and family services. Credit will be given for a Master’s degree equivalent to one (1) year full-time work experience, or its part-time equivalent.
