Enjoy a team atmosphere while working on a wide variety of mechanical equipment! Join us! We are currently hiring for a Mechanic position in the Fleet Division of the Community Services Department. This position performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, servicing, and repair of automotive, truck, and other mechanical equipment, including preventive maintenance, and general and major overhaul work on equipment with diesel and gasoline engines. Duties include: repairing and maintaining mechanical devices such as transmissions, clutches, hydraulic lifts, generators, differentials, starters, and alternators; performing motor tune-ups and electrical repairs; using a computer in order to process work orders; and much more!
 
Requirements:
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license
  • Possess or obtain (within 6 months of hire) and maintain a valid Wisconsin Class B CDL with no air brake restrictions
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, etc.)
  • Furnish a complete set of hand tools
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Two years of experience or an associate degree in automotive repair and maintenance, heavy duty diesel mechanic, or a related field 
  • ASE Master Truck Technician certification in diesel/gasoline engines

JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION SCOPE
 
Under direct supervision, performs skilled mechanical work at the apprentice level in the maintenance, servicing, and repair of automotive, truck, and other mechanical equipment. This position utilizes a thorough working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices involved in performing skilled mechanical work on a variety of motorized vehicles and mechanical equipment. This position must have a working knowledge of internal combustion engines, hazards, and safety precautions of the trade and an ability to understand and carry out effectively, oral and written instructions. The position must furnish a complete set of hand tools.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 
Perform general overhaul and preventative maintenance work on mechanical equipment including but not limited to: vans, automobiles, light and heavy trucks, road maintenance equipment, cemetery and parks turf maintenance equipment, air compressors, chain saws, snow removal equipment, tractors, water pumps, generators, trailers, and other city owned equipment.
 
Repair and maintain mechanical devices such as transmissions, clutches, hydraulic lifts, generators, differentials, starters, and alternators.
 
Perform motor tune-ups and electrical repairs such as wiring, emergency lighting, WiMax, AVL/GPS, and two-way radio equipment.
 
Perform stick and wire feed weld, acetylene weld and braze, plus metal fabrication.
 
Operate a laptop computer in order to process work orders using the City’s fleet management program and diagnose both gasoline and diesel engine fuel management systems, vehicle body management systems, and snow and ice control equipment.
 
Perform general maintenance work on non-mechanical devices such as wheels, tires, and minor chassis and body parts. Change and charge batteries. Repair frames.
 
Operate all types of equipment used by the City.
 
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 
Perform related duties as required.
 
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS
Must possess or obtain (within 30 days of hire) and maintain a valid Wisconsin driver’s license.
Must possess or obtain (within 6 months of hire) and maintain a valid Wisconsin Class B CDL with no air brake restrictions.
 
Must furnish a complete set of hand tools.
 
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, etc.) is required. Two years of experience or an Associate’s Degree in Automotive Repair and Maintenance, Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic, or a related field is preferred.
ASE Master Truck Technician certification in diesel/gasoline engines is preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is classified at the Very Heavy level, as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor in the Dictionary of Occupations Titles.
Job consists of a combination of walking, stooping/bending, twisting, reaching, pulling, pushing, climbing, and handling. There will be exposure to heat, cold, wet, slippery and high conditions. In addition, there will be exposure to dust, noise and chemicals. Lift on occasion 50 to 100 lbs., frequently 25 to 50 lbs., &/or constantly 10 to 20 lbs. WORK HOURS
 
Regular work hours are typically Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Typical summer work hours are on a 4-day per week 10 hours per day work schedule. Start times and end of shift times may vary.
