After-School Instructor - Visual Arts

CAP, a co-curricular program of CalArts, offers free arts programs for youth ages 4-18 in every discipline taught at the institute. CAP is dedicated to strengthening relationships with communities across the county, including high-need and systemically underserved areas

Position Summary: 

CalArts Community Arts Partnership (CAP) is currently seeking After-School Instructors for Visual Arts instruction Montebelllo, CA. We are considering applications on a rolling basis, and hiring as needed. 

CAP Instructors are practicing professional artists and educators who specialize in teaching one or more artistic disciplines and are committed to helping students discover and nurture their intellectual and artistic passions. CAP Instructors are responsible for developing and implementing a sequential standards-based curriculum that is creative, inclusive, and promotes individual artistic expression. CAP Instructors will work with participating elementary after-school programs, leading in-person Visual Arts lessons for students in grades 3rd-5th.

Location : Various Schools in Montebello, CA - in-person instruction

Schedule : Mondays and Wednesdays during general after-school hours (2:30-4:30 PM) 5-10 week residencies depending on school site needs 

Designation : Temporary/Seasonal 

Pay Range : $45.00 | instructional hour

$45.00 | supplemental hour

Supplemental hours include meetings, prep, site visits, planning, professional development, etc.  

Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience teaching in-school (K-8th), after-school or community based programs.
  • Experience in teaching and/or knowledge of Visual Arts content (concepts & skills).
  • Demonstrated knowledge or familiarity with the CA Arts Standards.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse populations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with in-school and after-school communities.
  • Exhibit patience, sensitivity, and enjoy working with youth.
  • Preferred: Bilingual in English/Spanish

Specific Qualifications

  • Must be willing to travel and have reliable transportation required to visit school campuses in the city of Montebello, CA as needed. 

Responsibilities & Tasks

Responsibilities include: 

  • Facilitate in-person Visual Arts instruction.
  • Implement a sequential standards-based curriculum for elementary school students. 
  • Create a safe learning environment that encourages student participation, artistic risk taking, and creativity. 

Tasks include

  • Implement positive classroom management strategies including routines and community agreements/rules. 
  • Prep materials, set-up, and clean-up of lessons for classrooms or carts.
  • Maintain a safe and clean classroom environment. 
  • Facilitate visual art lesson plans to be submitted to CalArts CAP Program Staff for review and feedback. 
  • Working in collaboration with the Program Coordinator to plan, coordinate and administrate the CalArts CAP after-school class, including but not limited to the following: maintenance and storage of supplies and equipment, monitoring program budget expenses, and planning events.
  • Attend all CAP mandatory orientation and meetings. 
  • Attend and participate in all CAP provided trainings and professional learning opportunities.
  • Represent CalArts/CAP among multiple school community stakeholders, including classroom teachers, parents, administrators, and after-school program leaders. 
  • Submitting timesheets and responding to emails and/or other communication in a timely manner.

Working Conditions: 

CAP Instructors will routinely: 

  • Work/teach outdoors.
  • Lift, push, pull, or carry supplies, equipment, instruments, or classroom furniture up to 40lbs. 
  • Bend, twist, reach, stand, and/or sit for long periods.
  • View LCD screens for long periods. 

Requirements

  • Completion of Background check, Live Scan certification and TB negative test results clearance. 
  • COVID-19 vaccination and submission of documented proof.
