Our Mission
A Place Called Home is a dynamic, non-profit youth and community center in South Central Los Angeles. APCH provides educational programs, counseling, mentoring, music, dance and art classes, fitness and health and wellness opportunities. As youth participate in our programs, they discover interests and talents and develop a better sense of themselves and their place in the world around them. The goal for the individual in this role is to support, guide and/or increase the likelihood that youth will stay in school, pursue higher education, attain viable jobs, and become active community members capable of making positive change in the world in which they live.

Internship Summary
The Visual Arts Program Intern will work under the Visual Arts Program Manager to facilitate classes, expositions, curriculum, and events. The Intern’s primary work project will be to help produce our Annual Comic Art and Literacy Expo (CALE) event, which will be held at APCH in October 2024. This event spreads literacy and awareness by exposing the community to writers and artists through workshops, book giveaways, and networking opportunities with professionals in the entertainment industry. In previous iterations CALE has been produced as both a virtual conference and a full in-person weekend exposition.
Creating exhibitor forms, surveys and database
Networking with relevant local school and community organizations
Creating an event floor plan
Working with APCH’s Fundraising Department to develop a giving network (bookstores, private giving, etc.)
Communicating with community partners
Developing marketing and promotional tools for event
Creating language around literacy and the arts The Visual Arts Program Intern will be key to supporting the success of this event by allowing us to lay a strong organizational groundwork over the summer months, our busiest time at APCH. This past year, having a dedicated intern allowed us to expand our exhibitor base, secure additional in- kind donations, and improve the event experience for both members and participants.
Curating and designing virtual and on-campus art galleries for class culminations
Photographing and tracking inventory of the visual arts program work
Editing and a providing inclusive content for social media - transcribing captions and descriptions
Collaborating and working with communications team
Organizing and confirming virtual or in-person field trips
Brief reports and check-ins
Supporting the Visual Arts Program in an administrative capacity (taking attendance, creating systems to track project progress and documentation, designing methods of competency and evaluation, etc.

Qualifications


In this role, the Visual Arts Program Intern will have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in planning and executing arts-centric community-serving events. They will develop philanthropic skills, civic engagement knowledge, art leadership, and the artistic applications there- in. They will build creative skills, specifically around graphics and design, as well as a comprehensive overview of the administrative and logistical components of engaging community members in the arts. Interns will also gain insight on the many facets of leadership. These facets include the ability to navigate multiple software programs, problem solving, budget maintenance, time management, resource allocation, creative collaboration, and team communication. The ideal candidate will have a passion for art and creativity, a strong ability to solve problems decisively, and should enjoy working with young people alongside a dedicated team of teaching artists. Applicants should have a drive to learn digital media software and exhibition and event logistics.

Education/Training/Experience

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent
  • Currently enrolled in college within LA County and have completed 1 semester or the equivalent by June 2024
  • Beginner skills in Adobe Creative Cloud
