Who We Are
Since its founding in 2010, Challenge Preparatory Charter School (Challenge Prep) has provided students and families with a successful academic program in Far Rockaway, Queens. We currently serve over 1200 scholars from Kindergarten to 12th grade across 3 sites. Our school's mission is to prepare students from the greater Far Rockaway community to excel academically, to demonstrate mastery of the NY State Learning Standards, and to achieve their career aspirations. Challenge cultivates and supports the intellectual, aesthetic, social, emotional, and ethical development of its students and prepares them to be responsible 21st century citizens. To accomplish its mission, Challenge offers a rigorous instructional program in a safe, supportive, technology-infused and data-enriched and social-emotional learning sequence, authentic field experiences, career counseling, and college coursework. It is understood that we are one organization with multiple sites, and it is expected that all members of the team collaborate to support all of our scholars.
SCHOOL OVERVIEW Challenge Charter High School (9-12) is the capstone component of the NYSED authorized K-12 Challenge Prep Charter School. Since its founding in 2010, Challenge Prep has become a successful K-12 program featuring a high school 9-12 Early College and Career and Technology Education (CTE) program for primarily economically disadvantaged students and students of color in Far Rockaway, New York City. Every Challenge High School student has the opportunity to earn a traditional high school diploma, advanced college standing course credits, and/or select from among several career pathway sequences that will incorporate significant on-the-job mentoring and work experience.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW: H.S. DIPLOMA AND THE ALLIED HEALTH CTE PATHWAY Each NYSED-Approved CTE program requires a multi-unit sequence associated with a specific career pathway. Each pathway begins with a required one-half unit course entitled Careers and Financial Management (CFM). CFM serves as Component One of 216 mandated CTE instructional hours for students pursuing a High School Diploma with a CTE concentration. Component Two requires that a minimum of 54 of those hours qualify as Work-Based Learning (WBL) experience, providing CTE students with both in school career development and job-related supervised field experiences associated with the student's chosen career pathway. The Allied Health program will prepare students to earn a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credential based upon identified industry specific assessments. A NYS approved course sequence identified as Health Sciences Core 1, 2, and 3 serve as the foundational curriculum.
JOB OVERVIEW: ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES TEACHER The Allied Health Science CTE Teacher will utilize the approved curriculum to assume primary responsibility for in-classroom instruction and assessment of CTE students who have elected the Allied Health Sciences Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Pathway. Generally, CNA-CTE students will be enrolled in their junior or senior years and will have successfully completed the prerequisite Careers and Financial Management (CFM) course. The Allied Health Sciences Teacher will also collaborate with the school's WBL/CTE Field Experience Coordinator and school counselors in enabling and monitoring student participation within the certified work-based learning program for each participating CTE diploma candidate.
Qualifications
    • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • Professional Credential: Current New York State Registered Nurse (RN)
    • Professional Work Experience: Two years of RN experience, one of which must be in a nursing home caring for the elderly and/or chronically ill
    • Teaching Qualifications (Hold or be eligible for at least one of the following):Certification to teach nurse aide or practical nursing; orLicensure as a trade schoolteacher of nurse aides; or
    • Three years teaching experience teaching nursing or nursing related programs in an academic setting approved by the Commissioner of Education; or
    • Three years teaching nurse aides in a residential health care facility; or
    • Completion of a professional-recognized course in teaching adult learners; or
    • Earn Alternate NYS Certification as determined by a NYS Individual Evaluation of prior training, occupational related or business work experience, college coursework or earned degrees, other teaching experience, and other teaching or industry issued business credentials.
    • OTHER DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
    • Prior successful teaching experience in a CTE career pathway field
    • Successful experience raising the achievement of urban students at the high school level
    • Strong communication skills with students, families, staff, and community members
    • Demonstrated experience in taking initiative, assuming accountability, being productive, attaining measurable goals, collaborating effectively, and accomplishing ongoing performance requirements
    • Ability to demonstrate commitment to and alignment with Challenge Charter High School's mission, vision, program goals, and curriculum
Ongoing Responsibilities
    • ONGOING RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Be accountable for all aspects of researching, developing, and teaching the CNA curriculum
    • Collaborate with the CFM teacher, School Counselor(s), and the Digital Resource Liaison to prepare and provide both exploratory and specifically tailored career learning and field experiences as part of each student's multi-year career pathway sequence
    • Make course related recommendations regarding curriculum, budget, and implementation requirements to building administration, or as requested.
    • Collaborate with the school's School Counselor personnel regarding matters of CTE pupil progress and ongoing individual student career planning.
    • Be accountable for all assigned operational, supervision, and faculty responsibilities as articulated in the high school teaching manual and as directed by the high school administrative team.
    • Set high expectations for students by establishing a daily culture for learning, personally responsible performance, and aspirational planning for one's future.
    • Serve as an ongoing member of the High School's CTE advisory, self-study, and strategic planning committees.
    • Make presentations to promote partnership participation and to report pupil progress as requested.
