Who We Are

Since its founding in 2010, Challenge Preparatory Charter School (Challenge Prep) has provided students and families with a successful academic program in Far Rockaway, Queens. We currently serve over 1200 scholars from Kindergarten to 12th grade across 3 sites. Our school’s mission is to prepare students from the greater Far Rockaway community to excel academically, to demonstrate mastery of the NY State Learning Standards, and to achieve their career aspirations. Challenge cultivates and supports the intellectual, aesthetic, social, emotional, and ethical development of its students and prepares them to be responsible 21st century citizens. To accomplish its mission, Challenge offers a rigorous instructional program in a safe, supportive, technology-infused and data-enriched and social-emotional learning sequence, authentic field experiences, career counseling, and college coursework. It is understood that we are one organization with multiple sites, and it is expected that all members of the team collaborate to support all of our scholars.

Understanding The Role

The Spanish Teacher reports to the Principal. He/she will have the primary responsibility for planning, programming, and teaching Spanish in alignment with the school's curricular objectives. Additionally, the teacher will be responsible for evaluating and reporting on all students in his or her classes. He or she will be responsible for establishing a positive, encouraging, appropriate relationship with students in which they are both held to high standards and supported in their attempts to meet them.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Because roles in small schools are varied and complex, serious consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate in their resume and cover letter experience and/or willingness to commit to the school’s mission and core beliefs and to become involved in these essential aspects
  • Believing that all students can succeed with ample social-emotional support in and out of the classroom 
  • Provide a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process
  • Facilitate activities and projects that incorporate communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking
  • Identify, select, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs
  • Collaborate with peers to enhance the instructional changing curricular needs and offers plans for improvement
  • Model professional and ethical standards when communicating with students, parents, peers, and the community
  • Assume responsibility for meeting his/her course and school-wide student performance goals
  • Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, coordinating, etc
  • Act in a professional and ethical manner at all times and comply with school policies, procedures, and expectations
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by their supervisor
  • All work responsibilities are subject to having performance goals and/or targets established as part of the annual performance planning process or as the result of organizational planning
  • Collaborating with colleagues to write unit plans and interim assessments; sharing teaching strategies, visiting peer classrooms, analyzing student data, and developing best practice pedagogy that supports literacy and critical thinking skills across all subject areas
  • Applying data gathered through formative and summative assessments to guide instructional plan
  • Developing an individual growth plan, which includes professional goals and objectives in collaboration with the Principal and/or Assistant Principal
  • Utilizing technology which includes a parent/student portal and school website that provides regular written updates and/or grades
Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Education and a valid NYS teaching certificate in the area of Spanish
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Spanish teacher preferred
  • Demonstrated success in urban education
  • Knowledge of encouraging students to be global citizens and active members of our local communities, linguistically and culturally, necessitates students being bilingual and culturally literate in Spanish
  • Aim to facilitate the development of strong comprehension and speaking skills, develop ease and confidence with reading and writing skills, encourage students’ integration of language learning across their daily academic experience, and introduce students to the joys and beauty of language learning
  • Desire to continue professional development
  • Excellent organization skills and an ability to coordinate multiple tasks and activities
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills and an ability to keep multiple stakeholder groups, including parents, teachers, staff, volunteers, and partners, informed of critical issues, activities, and schedules
  • Excellent work ethic, positive attitude, flexibility, and willingness to perform tasks assigned
  • Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and teachers in the school environment and community.
