Job DescriptionPOSITION DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, this role functions as a member of a collaborative research team that provides education in research and promotes scholarly activity. The role works cross-functionally with academic affairs, financial affairs, and advancement as well as outside partners. The position oversees the practice-based research network, KERN, and leads the development and administration of externally funded grants, contracts, and related research functions. This position serves as the primary leader in sponsored research, collaborating with faculty and staff in the submission of sponsored projects and supervising the responsible and effective management of awarded projects and PIs.
Specific ResponsibilitiesLead the Operations of KERN
  • Direct and oversee the operations of the Kansas Education and Research Network (KERN).
  • Develop KERN into an active practice-based research network, working to conduct research aimed at improving clinical practice, with a special focus on Kansas.
  • Engage with community stakeholders to ensure KERN impacts the needs of the communities it serves.
  • Collaborate with clinicians, medical students, and researchers to leverage the practical experience of health care providers and the methodological expertise of researchers.
  • Work to improve the delivery of health care through translational research and promote evidence-based medicine.
Lead Research Initiatives
  • Direct and oversee research studies in accordance with the institutional research agenda and strategic plan.
  • Ensure that research methodologies and approaches are robust and align with academic standards.
  • Engage in scholarly activity with outcomes of public dissemination of scholarship.
  • Engage in research-practice partnerships.
  • Actively mentor graduate students and faculty, providing guidance and technical assistance.
  • Participate in training, coaching, and supporting students in engaging in research projects.
  • Collect, assemble, and maintain relevant datasets.
Lead a Small Research Team
  • Ensure projects are progressing according to plan and within budget.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to foster a collaborative and productive research environment.
Lead Sponsored Projects
  • Contribute to the development of a culture of sponsored research.
  • Identify new grant opportunities, contribute to grant writing, and manage relationships with grant officers, including leading content- and research- driven grants, as well as tracking and communicating impact in grant reports.
  • Promote faculty research, scholarship, and creative activity, including but not limited to offering workshops and information to enhance faculty grant seeking and competitiveness, working collaboratively with faculty and administrative units to promote best practices and a culture of grant writing, disseminating information on external grants and awards, and identifying new and appropriate funding sources.
  • Assist faculty members in proposal development, budget preparation, and final submission of external proposals, ensuring that proposals receive appropriate internal approvals and are in compliance with appropriate guidelines.
  • Liaison with the Office of Finance to assist faculty and staff with grant proposal budget preparation, ensuring compliance with sponsor guidelines.
  • Collaborate with administrators to ensure post-award support for PIs, including award setup, effective and compliant administration of awards (including compliance with regulations surrounding PHI, human subjects, biosafety, and intellectual property related matters), subawards, reporting, closeout, and negotiations with sponsor.
  • Stay up to date on current developments with regard to availability of funding (i.e., NSF, NIH, HRSA, etc.) and changes in compliance and administrative requirements related to sponsored programs.
Strategic Project Alignment
  • Coordinate and align research projects with broader institutional activities and priorities.
  • Work collaboratively with various departments and faculties to integrate research efforts with campus and community initiatives.
Community Engagement and Collaboration
  • Engage with the local community to integrate their perspectives and needs into research projects. Collaborate with community leaders and stakeholders to enhance the impact and relevance of research outcomes, promoting social change and community development.
  • Promote scholarly activity and research by KHSC faculty and students and KERN members with outcomes of public dissemination of scholarship.
Service
  • Perform committee service.
  • Participate in student interviewing, mentorship, and career counseling as needed.
  • Assist with interviewing and hiring of department faculty as requested.
  • Participate in the peer evaluation of department faculty.
  • Collaborate with Assistant Dean of Outcomes & Assessment (ADOA) on all evaluation of all research activities.
Qualification(s)A leader with a track record of proven effective academic and administrative experience in research and/or health care education.
  • Advanced degree in a relevant area from an accredited institution (or international equivalent). Doctoral degree preferred.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated career progression.
  • Experience building and maintaining partner relationships.
  • Experience with primary research, health care action research, data collection, or evaluation.
  • Computer expertise sufficient to carry out and advance the capacity of the office and experience using electronic research administration systems (grants.gov, research.gov, etc.)
  • Experience with grant development or writing preferred.
  • Experience designing analyses with practice implications preferred.
  • Experience with scholarly publishing preferred.
  • Advanced training or certification in research development or sponsored-research administration preferred.
Key Competencies
  • Ability to assist faculty members and staff in various disciplines and departments prepare competitive grant applications to external funders (NSF and NIH experience highly desirable).
  • Strong understanding of research methods.
  • Knowledge of pre- and post-award processes and administration, including a knowledge of federal policies and regulations related to sponsored projects preferred.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and project management skills, including the ability to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously and in accordance with external project deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills across academic disciplines and administrative departments.
  • Budgeting and management skills to maintain and report financial records.
