SUMMARY

Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana (SUSLA) is accepting applications for the Academic Advisor position. SUSLA is a comprehensive community college serving Shreveport, Bossier City, and surrounding areas in Northwest Louisiana. It is one of five campuses constituting the Historically Black Southern University System. The University serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate students and offers 32 undergraduate degrees and certificate programs in a variety of fields including Allied Health, Nursing, Aerospace Technology, Business Studies, Behavioral Science/Education and Science & Technology.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Academic Advisor will be a member of a dynamic team of professional advisors at Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA). Each Academic Advisor will be assigned to one of the three (3) Academic Divisions at SUSLA. The Academic Advisor will work closely with faculty within their assigned division(s), the SUSLA Student Success Center to provide academic advising and support services to the different cohorts of students served by the institution. It is the responsibility of each academic adviser to support each other to ensure division-wide effective academic advisement—hence they form an advisement team on the academic side of the institution.

Function: To participate in the planning and conveyance of academic advising and student support services that promote coherently comprehensive educational opportunities for all students. Cooperates with faculty by providing quality assistance for all academic advising needs of individuals or groups of students.

PRIMARY RESPONSBILITIES:

  • Advise a caseload of students interested in programs aligned to a particular division (i.e., Allied Health and Nursing, B-STEM, and ASHSSE) at SUSLA; this may include undeclared students, freshman students, and academically at-risk students
  • Collaborate with Student Success Coaches to advise students, who are transitioning from the First-Year Experience (FYE) programs to ensure that they acquire the general education competencies to provide the fundamentals for success in advance studies and the core skills desired by employers
  • Teach the University’s College Success course as an adjunct, which assists students in achieving academic success; provides personal resources to achieve academic and professional goals; and creates a learning community of first-time freshmen
  • Assist students to identify their academic values and goals, consistent with their capabilities, interests, and educational backgrounds
  • Monitor the progress of students in academic jeopardy through active outreach and intrusive advising
  • Refer students to appropriate resources to support their academic success (i.e., financial aid, career center, tutoring center and student development programs, etc.)
  • Develop and deliver University-wide academic advising programs to assist students in the exploration and declaration of an academic major
  • Develop student advising programs throughout the campus to assist students during peak registration periods
  • Provide students with in-depth college information and policy interpretation relevant to their academic progress (i.e., graduation requirements, transfer information, counselors, etc.)
  • Collaborate with schools/colleges and other campus departments to provide advising support and training to faculty and professional advisors
  • Collaborate with recruitment, admissions, and other campus departments to provide prospective student interest/preview and new student orientation events to assist in attracting potential students and effectively integrating and engaging new students into the campus climate/culture
  • Facilitate development of educational plan/academic appeal for low GPA, suspended and probation students using appropriate advising strategies in order to adhere to college policy
  • Obtain, create, manage, and analyze statistical data to report on student success and retention
  • Provide limited services during some weekend and evening hours
  • Participate in an extensive training program and on-going professional development
  • May manage student workers
  • Perform related duties as assigned

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, educational administration, student development, or related field from an accredited college/university; a minimum of 3 years professional academic or career advising/counseling experience and/or other relevant experience in areas such as career planning, educational planning, or counseling in post-secondary education. Incumbent should have excellent organizational and analytical skills; demonstrated knowledge and use of personal computers; excellent communication skills including the ability to make public presentations; and an understanding of working with diverse university student populations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of relevant student development theories and application of that knowledge in developing a robust philosophy of advising that includes prescriptive, developmental, coaching, and teaching approaches
  • Knowledge of relevant academic programs and career pathways, the range and structure of majors, general education, and school and college requirements
  • Experience in the interpretation of academic policies, regulations, and procedures
