SUMMARY

Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana (SUSLA) is accepting applications for the Director- Student Support Services position. SUSLA is a comprehensive community college serving Shreveport, Bossier City, and surrounding areas in Northwest Louisiana. It is one of five campuses constituting the Historically Black Southern University System. The University serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate students and offers 32 undergraduate degrees and certificate programs in a variety of fields including Allied Health, Nursing, Aerospace Technology, Business Studies, Behavioral Science/Education and Science & Technology.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the immediate supervision of the Executive Director for Retention and Student Outcomes, the Director of Student Support Services oversees the overall implementation of the SSS grant, administers the program budget and authorizes expenditures of federal funds with approval from the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Success and the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. As the immediate supervisor of SSS project staff, the Director is directly responsible for their development and evaluation. The Director will lead the development, implementation, administration and activities of the program in accordance with federal regulations and grant objectives. The Director ensures that the SSS Program focuses on the required services of tutorial advisement, graduation/ transfer assistance, financial literacy and education advisement and accomplishes the related goals and objectives with an overall focus on student retention. The Director must represent the SSS project on university committees and collaborate with other directors, student success coaches, department heads, faculty and staff of other offices and agencies throughout the university and the communities the university serves.

PRIMARY RESPONSBILITIES:

  • Manages and supervises the operations of the Student Support Services project.
  • Guides retention efforts for the Student Support Services program
  • Develops and submits periodic project reports requested by university administration, funding sources, and university departments.
  • Develops, directs and evaluates SSS program in accordance with USDOE SSS rules and regulations; designs and implements SSS program, policy and procedures
  • With the support from project staff, completes and submits, in accordance with USDOE instructions, the Annual Performance Report (APR).
  • Plans and implements with project staff a recruitment and persistence plan that assures equal access to project services for all project participants.
  • Supervises the determination of eligibility and selection of project participants in accordance with SSS guidelines; collects and maintains program data and prepares reports as required by USDOE and SUSLA.
  • Directs the recruiting of new participants
  • Recruits, trains, supervises and evaluates project staff and student employees; submits periodic attendance reports to payroll.
  • Establishes and maintains liaison with the offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Success Center, Residential Life, Dean of Students & Campus Life, first year faculty and staff and other relevant campus units to ensure all required services are provided to SSS program project participants.
  • Plans and facilitates regular SSS program staff meetings and meets regularly with the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success.
  • Participates in university-wide initiatives.
  • Plans and facilitates program sponsored events in collaboration with project staff.
  • Coordinates public relations initiatives for the project and fosters an institutional climate to support the project mission, goals and objectives.
  • Disseminates USDOE and TRIO related information to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success, project staff and students and when relevant to the university community.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree; 2 years of administrative, supervisory experiences in project/program development and implementation.
  • Must have problem solving skills, ability to work many nights and weekends.
  • Must be able to travel and operate a motor vehicle and feel comfortable driving a 15-passenger van for student trips.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Proactive and self-sufficient with the ability to manage up and across.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills (ability to meet deadlines).
  • Able to build relationships with academic partners.
  • Strong attention to detail, adept in creative problem-solving, and resourceful.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in counseling, social work, psychology, sociology.
  • Three to five years’ experience in retention services.
  • TRiO program development and implementation.
  • Working knowledge of student data base systems such as Banner or other Student Success systems.
