Who We Are

ILPA is the only organization dedicated exclusively to the private markets Limited Partner community. Representing more than 600 institutions and approximately USD $3 trillion of private equity assets under management, ILPA’s members include public pensions, corporate pensions, endowments, foundations, family offices, insurance companies and sovereign wealth funds located around the world. Through its efforts in the areas of education, advocacy, standards and best practices and community building, ILPA aims to have a direct and expanding impact on the investment returns of our members and the health of the private markets industry globally.

Position Description

The Head of Europe will be responsible for building out ILPA’s on-the ground presence in Europe through a base of operations in London and steering and supporting the organization’s engagement strategy in the region with members and other stakeholders. As the organization’s lead representative in the region, the individual will serve as ILPA’s main point of contact in Europe and coordinate closely with colleagues in Washington, DC and Toronto to ensure that our European activities inform, support and enhance ILPA’s global organizational strategic priorities.

ILPA’s dedicated staff of more than 30 professionals serves a diverse membership spanning more than 50 countries. The ideal candidate will be globally minded with a willingness to ‘roll up their sleeves’ and work in a collaborative fashion across offices, teams and projects.

Roles and Responsibilities

External Presence

  • Engage the more than 100 institutional allocator ILPA Members in Europe with respect to market trends, shared common challenges and opportunities to enhance the professionalism of LPs
  • In collaboration with the ILPA team, including the Director of Membership, develop and execute a growth plan for the region
  • Capture and synthesize insights and market intelligence derived from in-region stakeholder engagement; share best practices and contribute a European perspective to develop ILPA responses to emerging challenges and opportunities
  • Play leading role as (Co) Host / Content Lead for ILPA flagship events in the region and represent ILPA at marquee regional industry (i.e., non-ILPA) events
  • Cultivate the European Advisory Council and leverage the Council’s input to shape ILPA’s European strategy, industry engagement and brand-building activities over time
  • Develop and execute a regional stakeholder engagement strategy to elevate ILPA’s visibility in the region with general partners, service providers, industry organizations and conferences, policymakers and press

Internal Leadership

  • Lead ILPA’s European operations, including staff oversight and budget management
  • Participate meaningfully in the development and execution of ILPA strategy, content priorities, culture and other internal leadership efforts to enhance ILPA’s long-term sustainability
  • Direct recruitment and professional development activities to fulfill European office staffing needs long-term, including sourcing local talent to sustain and grow operations
  • Build effective internal partnerships with the Finance, HR, Events, Membership, Education and Leadership teams and ensure close collaboration across the organization to support execution of ILPA’s strategic priorities

Required Capabilities

Industry Expertise

  • Deep understanding of European private markets landscape
  • 15 years of leadership and operations experience in institutional asset management or related field. Private equity background preferred, but not required
  • Graduate or advanced degree in relevant field (e.g., business, law, economics, finance, international affairs) preferred
  • Able to communicate insights and nuance in a complex ecosystem and tailor strategies accordingly

Leadership and Organizational Skills

  • Energy and enthusiasm for relationship-building and engaging external audiences, willing to serve as an organizational spokesperson
  • Superb interpersonal and communication (written & verbal) skills
  • Creative, constructive and resourceful collaborator and strategic thinker; able to manage competing priorities and timelines, plan work and operate effectively and seamlessly across teams and regions
  • Internally motivated and comfortable in a ‘start-up’ office
  • Team builder and developer of individual talent
  • Culturallyaware and able to operate in new environments
  • Unwavering commitment to integrity, professionalism, accountability, and high ethical standards
  • Confident user of Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Salesforce
