The Conservation Engagement Programs Specialist advances Denver Zoo’s mission and goals by cultivating moments of awe for guests and creating opportunities to act for animals. This position sits within a new, institution-wide approach to connecting guests to Denver Zoo’s mission, conservation work, and opportunities to act for animals. The Conservation Engagement specialist will facilitate interpretive and educational onsite programs, maintains program equipment and resources, and acts as a model and support for variable part-time staff and volunteers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 
Priority 1 - Program Facilitation
  • Provide high-quality science-based interpretation for guests, through either scripted narration, interactive experiences at specific exhibits, or more informal interactions at themed activity stations throughout areas of the zoo.
  • Collaborate with other Denver Zoo staff and volunteers to successfully deliver these programs.
  • Could train in and handle live animals and biofacts (animal specimens) for programs. Regularly facilitates programs as the primary host/facilitator on certain days and substitutes coverage in all program areas, as needed.
  • Helps ensure environmental and health safety in all program areas. Able to adapt programs to changing circumstances or to meet the needs of guests.
Priority 2 - Daily Logistics and Support 
  • Prepare weekly staff updates and schedules with the Conservation Engagement Programs Coordinator and Manager and peer Specialist.
  • Prepare and maintain seasonal volunteer schedules.
  • Act as the first point of contact for facilitators, area leads, and volunteers for daily briefings, debriefings and when issues arise.
  • Maintain volunteer and staff program area resources including supplies, written guides, and equipment. Keeps detailed records, runs reports, and collects data for program areas, as requested. 
Priority 3 - Communication
  • Communicate clearly with all guests, facilitation staff, and volunteers and models outstanding customer service and engagement.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with facilitators, volunteers, and departmental staff zoo wide.
  • Conduct daily check-ins and communications with Conservation Engagement volunteers and staff.
  • Communicate pertinent information to volunteers and team members in an appropriate, professional, and timely manner.
  • Problem solves with volunteers and staff team.
Priority 4 - Staff and Volunteer Development 
  • Model best practices in program delivery, interpretation, and guest interactions. Acts in a mentorship and lead role for all Conservation Engagement Facilitators and volunteers, including assisting with and leading (as requested) staff and volunteer onboarding and training.
  • Assist in developing and delivering coaching and feedback for new staff and volunteers, assessing programs, and staff development throughout the year with respective Conservation Engagement Programs Coordinator and Manager.
  • Schedule and oversee logistics (visuals/handouts and technological aspects) for training in different areas.
  • Partners with Coordinators on effective conflict resolution when issues arise.
Other Duties/Responsibilities
  • Participate in and provide support for Conservation Engagement and Guest Experience Divisions activities including special events, Free Days, professional development opportunities, programmatic needs and departmental strategic planning.
  • Serve on committees and projects as requested.
  • Represent Denver Zoo to the community in a professional and positive manner.
  • Comply with all zoo policies and perform other supportive duties as needed.
  • Acts as a good steward of Denver Zoo’s resources.
  • This position will interact with managers at all levels and staff members across the organization, in addition to members of external organizations and the public.
  • Other assistance, as designated by the Conservation Engagement leadership team, to support the overall goals of the department and organization. Denver Zoo retains the right to add or change duties and/or responsibilities at any time.
Technical / Professional Requirements & Qualifications
  • Academic, work, volunteer, or internship experience in guest service, guest engagement, customer service, or education with multigenerational audiences.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office 365 products to organize and manage projects and communication, scheduling software, and Volgistics are preferred. 
  • Exposure to programming within informal learning environments such as, but not limited to, a zoo, aquarium, museum, park, historical site, and/or botanic garden.
  • Exposure to training and coaching staff and/or volunteers.
  • Requires organizational skills, written and oral communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize work and tasks. Requires adaptability to produce and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, multi-task and changing environment, and the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Requires the ability to embrace, support, and integrate Denver Zoo’s philosophies to promote and demonstrate its commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity, and anti-racism.
  • Availability to work weekends and evenings. Expectation to work 5-day non-traditional work week (including Saturday or Sunday), time off planned with notice.
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English (preferred).

Position Conditions

  • Ability to pass a background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screen.
  • Schedule Availability: This position will require working one or both weekend days and some evenings as requested.
  • Work Location: On campus.

Compensation

Range for this position is $19.67 - $23.12 (hourly).
