Objective

The Primary Language Tutor is responsible for assisting English Learners experiencing difficulty in learning and/or acculturation. Through a common cultural identity and the use of native language, the Primary Language Tutor provides access to the learning process through the development of cognitive, academic and linguistic skills which will ultimately transfer to learning processes in mainstream classrooms.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Ensures that all actions are compliant with established Board policies as well as the mission, vision and values defined by the district and Board of Education.

2. Carries out such additional duties as required or as conditions necessitate.

3. Participates in job training and professional growth opportunities in order to enhance ability to perform the essential functions of the job.

4. Assists students with language skills in writing, speaking, reading and listening skills.

5. Translate instructions and information from the classroom teacher for the student.

6. Identify student comprehension difficulties and explain concepts in a manner to optimize student learning.

7. Facilitates the acculturation process by serving as a link between the culture of the home and the culture of school.

8. Provides in-class tutoring to individuals or small groups.

9. Collaborates with the ESL Specialist to modify assignments and translates instruction into the native language of the student.

10. Utilizes native language to develop concepts, extend academic and/or conceptual levels and to facilitate communication between the classroom teacher and the student.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office/school environment. Individual PLTs may work up to 25 hours per week. Hours may fluctuate based on student need.

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
