SUMMARY: This is intermediate level correctional work involving the supervision of criminal and sometimes violent offenders in a barrier-free operational environment. EDUCATION: Possesses a high school diploma or general education diploma (GED).
EXPERIENCE: A minimum of one (1) year sworn service with NRADC or between four (4) and ten (10) years of continuous service in a state or local, fully accredited jail or correctional facility.
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Capable of communicating verbally and issuing orders in a clear and direct manner. Ability to maintain continuous observation of persons, activities, and surroundings is critical. Capable of recognizing and responding to audio and visual alarms. Capable of running 100 yards and immediately engaging in vigorous physical activity. With training, must be capable of applying physical force, rendering first aid and CPR, and qualifying to Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) standards with a Detention Center-issued pistol and shotgun. After training, tolerates short-term, indirect exposure to aerosol, and liquid Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) (also known as “pepper spray.”)
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND/OR REGISTRATIONS: Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age, must be a U.S. citizen, and must be available to work irregular hours. Accessibility through telephonic means of contact is required. The incumbent must maintain Jail Officer certification as mandated by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Successful completion of state-mandated training within one (1) year from date of employment is required. Incumbent NRADC sworn staff must qualify for advancement in accordance with criteria established in the NRADC CAD Manual. Annual recertification is required. New hires who qualify under the CAD (Career Advancement and Development) Program Experiential Policy must fully attain all qualification standards within the initial 12 months of their employment and annually thereafter.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Surveillance equipment, control center equipment, computer terminal, communications equipment, facility vehicles, locking devices, fire alarms, firearms, less than lethal munitions and devices, restraint equipment, riot equipment, and batons.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Requires medium to heavy physical effort requiring the exertion of force including but not limited to, standing, and walking for long periods of time, running (up to 300 feet) picking up and moving heavy objects, climbing stairs and ladders, balancing, stooping, bending, crouching, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, crawling, kneeling, grasping, and repetitive motions, use of physical force and deployment of force equipment as needed. Must be able to perform basis tasks after short bursts of strenuous physical exertion. Effective vocal communication, hearing and vision is required. Regular exposure to pre- and post-conviction inmates makes position susceptible to violent and unpredictable behavior. Must be able to lift 55 pounds, pass an annual physical agility test and successfully complete the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Academy for Jail Officers. Position requires being able to work flexible schedules – including holidays and weekends.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work involves some degree of risk to personal safety in an inherently stressful environment.
