SUMMARY: This is entry level correctional work position involving the supervision of criminal and sometimes violent offenders in a barrier-free operational environment. Work is normally performed in accordance with established policy and procedure without constant supervision. Independent judgment and immediate action are often required to ensure safety and security.
EDUCATION: Possesses a high school diploma or general education diploma (GED).
EXPERIENCE: None required. Preference is given to those candidates with prior experience in the field of corrections.
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Capable of communicating verbally and issuing orders in a clear and direct manner. Ability to maintain continuous observation of persons, activities, and surroundings is critical. Capable of recognizing and responding to audio and visual alarms. Capable of running 100 yards and immediately engaging in vigorous physical activity. With training, must be capable of applying physical force, rendering first aid and CPR, and qualifying to Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) standards with a Detention Center-issued pistol and shotgun. After training, tolerates short-term, indirect exposure to aerosol, and liquid Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) (also known as “pepper spray.”)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Requires medium to heavy physical effort requiring the exertion of force including but not limited to, standing, and walking for long periods of time, running (up to 300 feet) picking up and moving heavy objects, climbing stairs and ladders, balancing, stooping, bending, crouching, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, crawling, kneeling, grasping, and repetitive motions, use of physical force and deployment of force equipment as needed. Must be able to perform basis tasks after short bursts of strenuous physical exertion. Effective vocal communication, hearing and vision is required. Regular exposure to pre- and post-conviction inmates makes position susceptible to violent and unpredictable behavior. Must be able to lift 55 pounds, pass an annual physical agility test and successfully complete the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Academy for Jail Officers. Position requires being able to work flexible schedules – including holidays and weekends.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work involves some degree of risk to personal safety in an inherently stressful environment.
