Histotechnician / Histotechnologist - Trainee

Clinical Pathology Associates, Waco Division has an immediate fulltime position for a Histotechnician / Histotechnologist.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Histotechnician / Histotechnologist trainee is assigned to the Histology Department is responsible for the preparation of high-quality histology and immunohistochemistry slides for microscopic examination and diagnosis by the pathologist, by performing the following essential duties and responsibilities. Responsible for freezing, cutting and staining tissue submitted for frozen section analysis.

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt TYPE OF POSITION: Full Time

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Embed and cut permanent tissue sections that are consistently high quality, being well sectioned and stained.
  • Operate computerized equipment to process tissue sections, and to stain and cover slip histology and immunohistochemistry (IHC) slides.
  • Maintain Quality Assurance documentation of equipment.
  • Perform special stains on tissue sections as requested by pathologist.
  • Perform daily Quality Assurance procedures for routine, special stain and IHC staining procedures.
  • Accurately file slides and blocks daily.
  • Cut specimens submitted for frozen section using a Cryostat, preparing the frozen section slide for staining, and staining with the appropriate stain.
  • Assist Pathologists with frozen section procedures, both in town and at out-of-town locations.
  • Performs ancillary procedures and duties to facilitate the operations of the Histology Laboratory.
  • Log and accession tissue specimens into the computer system.
  • Load slides in the automated stainer for Hematoxylin & Eosin (H&E) staining.
  • Ensure that the automated stainer is maintained and filled with staining solutions, buffer, and stains.
  • Prints patient(s) slide labels from the Anatomic Pathology computer system.
  • Coverslip H&E stained slides and labels with the preprinted patients label from the computer system, carefully matching the appropriate specimen, block, and slide identification.
  • Ensures that CPA Waco Division cases are correctly separated for assignment and distribution.
  • Print and label special stained patient slides and distribute to the ordering Pathologist.
  • Pick-up and deliver specimens and reports, when required.
  • Assists the IHC Section in the maintenance, operation and troubleshooting of the automated staining instrument.
  • Preforms microtomy and prepares unstained slides for IHC staining from IHC requisitions.
  • Prepare and load solutions, buffers, and other items on the IHC automated staining instrument.
  • Performs routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and spaces recording pertinent maintenance data
  • Research cases, retrieve slides, blocks, and reports as needed.
  • Assist with the Histology supply inventory.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor or Management.

WORK EXPERENCE REQUIREMENT (Preferred)

  • Knowledge of healthcare terminology
  • 2 years of experience within a healthcare (histopathology) setting

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • An earned associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology obtained from an accredited institution OR Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination. In addition, the individual must have laboratory training, including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLA, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or equivalent is preferred.
  • Must possess necessary qualifications to perform high complexity testing under the Clinical Laboratories Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) regulations (Sec. 493.1489)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to perform all procedures required to obtain slides from fixed and unfixed tissue and fluids to enable a pathologist to render a diagnosis.
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand and walk, occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch—some bending and stretching are required.
  • Use of the telephone is required.
  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds.
