Clinical Pathology Associates is Hiring a Grossing Assistant / Pathology Technician (Mon-Fri, 9:30am -6:00pm) Rotating Saturdays (1/2 day) Near Waco, TX

Clinical Pathology Associates, Waco Division has an immediate full-time position for a Grossing Assistant/Pathology Technician.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Pathology Technician functions as an assistant to the Pathologists and Pathologists’ Assistants of Clinical Pathology Associates, Waco Division, and is assigned both technical (histology and cytology related) and non-technical (Accessioning & Inventory/Supply) duties which provide both efficient and cost-effective non-physician support to the Practice. Provides technical support to other CPA, and Waco Division departments as needed.

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt TYPE OF POSITION: Full Time

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Preparation of tissue specimens at CPA, Waco Division histology laboratory in the Waco, Texas.
  • Gross description, sectioning and submission of pathology specimens.
  • Frozen section assistance as needed at CPA, Waco Division and surrounding community hospitals, as assigned.
  • Technician assists in all technical aspects of frozen section preparation.
  • Accessioning and labeling
  • Proper mounting and freezing.
  • Cutting
  • Staining
  • Cover slipping
  • Cleanup of facility grossing and Frozen Section areas.
  • Accessions Histology (tissue), GYN Cytology and Non-GYN Cytology specimens into the computer system.
  • Prepares tissue specimens for gross examination.
  • Prepares Non-GYN cell block specimens for tissue sectioning.
  • Scans slides on the Imager / Scanner.
  • Maintains supply and inventory control.
  • Order supplies for both technical and non-technical areas of CPA, Waco Division.
  • Maintains inventory of common items in the supply room.
  • Maintains copies of orders and tracts ordered items.
  • Retrieves, sorts and files packing slips and invoices received.
  • Forwards invoices and packing slips to the corporate financial office for payment.
  • Accounts for supply and inventory documents forwarded.
  • Courier, as needed, based on employee’s availability.
  • Administrative support
  • Miscellaneous duties in support of CPA, Waco Division as assigned.

WORK EXPERENCE REQUIREMENT

  • No experience required.
  • Experience in an anatomic laboratory is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, staff, and management.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Strong ability to communicate verbally.
  • Ability to work with biological and potentially biohazardous tissue and fluid specimens.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • An earned associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution, OR Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination. In addition, the individual must have laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLA, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or equivalent is preferred.
  • Must possess necessary qualifications to perform high complexity testing under the Clinical Laboratories Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) regulations (Sec. 493.1489)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to operate a vehicle.
  • Requires walking, carrying supplies or specimens.
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
  • While performing the duties of this job, employees should be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • The employee is required to stand and walk, occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch—some bending and stretching are required.
