City of Fort Smith is Hiring a TEMPORARY TRANSIT DRIVER Near Fort Smith, AR

Temporary Transit Driver

Job Summary:
The incumbent under the guidance of the Driver Supervisor is responsible for answering phones in the dispatch center to coordinate driver activity, as well as provide administrative functions in regards to route deviations, time and driver management, minor conflict resolution and ADA issues.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times.
1. Answers incoming telephone calls and provides radio dispatch functions such as routing, rerouting, assisting drivers and passengers
2. Obtains all necessary information from passengers concerning the registration processes
3. Works directly with passengers to prevent conflicts with correlating schedules
4. Processes ticket/orders/sales, and pass cards
5. Assists drivers and passengers in the understanding of operational rules and procedures
6. Utilizes specialized software to schedule and coordinate demand response and paratransit passenger trips, registers new passengers, adjusts passenger data as necessary, and organizes and disperses driver trip sheets
7. Reports route and unit productivity, determines and implements temporary route deviations, and recommend long term route modifications
8. Coordinates vehicle change outs to address maintenance concerns or cleaning to avoid route delays
9. Performs as relief driver as needed
10. Provides orientation training for scheduling and dispatch
11. Performs NTD passenger sampling assistance, and provides direction on proper farebox collection procedures
12. Monitors driver functions to ensure fitness for duty, safety, efficiency and accuracy
13. Coordinates emergency recovery and route deviations due to temporary obstructions
14. Collects necessary accident details for reporting purposes
15. Assess and assigns temporary ADA eligibility and provides information to the Operations Committee to assist in the permanent eligibility process.
16. Assists driver supervisor as needed
17. Regular attendance and timeliness is required.
Qualification Requirements
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience in an office environment including 2-way radio usage and computer skills in spreadsheets and word processing, and calendar software functions.
  • A complete and thorough understanding of Public Transportation Systems.
  • Must hold a Class C CDL with passenger endorsement license with appropriate medical certificate within 9 months of hire.
o The minimum progression of obtaining said CDL is as follows: Must sit for written exam within 3 months of hire; must pass written exam within 6 months of hire; and must pass driving exam within 9 months of hire.
  • Second language skill is preferred.
Other Skills and Abilities
The incumbent should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, computer skills and must possess good organizational skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The incumbent should have the ability to effectively read a map and give accurate directions.
