Job Description:
The incumbent under the guidance of the Street Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for assisting the maintenance personnel and helping to maintain the city streets and city right of ways.
Essential Duties and Responsibilitiesinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times.
1. Patch potholes and assist with hot mix repairs.
2. Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
3. Perform dirt work duties as needed.
4. Operate all related equipment and tools in a safe manner.
5. Assist in cement work when needed.
6. Operate a tractor, brush hog, sprayer / riding mowers.
7. Operate mosquito truck and sprayer.*
8. Place larvicide where requested and document placement.*
9. Regular attendance and timeliness is required.
Qualification Requirements:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Minimum of one-year general labor work experience in construction or maintenance is preferred but not required.
  • Must be proficient in the use of mowing equipment.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • IF WORKING ON THE MOSQUITO TRUCK, MUST BE ABLE TO WORK EVENINGS.
Other Skills and Abilities:
The incumbent should possess knowledge of the city streets and the layout of the city. The incumbent must have good verbal communications skills. Problem solving and analytical ability are required to perform the duties of this position. Good communication and interpersonal skills are also required. The ability to listen to and follow verbal instruction is necessary.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must frequently stand, walk, talk and hear. Occasionally sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects. The incumbent must also stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, color, distance and peripheral vision. Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also necessary.
The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 75 pounds.

While performing the duties of this position the incumbent is exposed to fumes or airborne particles and works near moving mechanical parts. The incumbent will frequently work in remote locations, sometimes in and/or near heavy vegetation and wooded areas, which can expose individuals to outdoor elements. The incumbent is also exposed to outdoor weather conditions and is at risk of electric shock or vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
