JOB TITLE: School Counselor or Social Worker

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

SUPERVISES: Not Applicable

EMPLOYMENT AND FLSA STATUS: Exempt

POSITION PURPOSE

Under the general supervision of the Building Principal, to provide students, parents, administrators, and other teaching staff with information on career and or educational opportunities; and assist students in developing educational and occupational goals and plans.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Support Students by offering clinical expertise

  • Consult with students regarding their learning and behavioral support needs and counsel them as necessary

  • Assist in the early recognition and prevention of educational problems.

  • Monitor student progress and make informed, timely educational decisions.

  • Support Students by collaborating with other educators

  • Participate as a team member in comprehensive evaluation, review and re-evaluation processes.

  • Participate in the development of the student’s Individual Education Plan and/or 504.

  • Assist teachers in the development and implementation of appropriate classroom behavior support strategies and social skills instruction.

  • Assist with the inclusion of exceptional students into the regular general education classroom.

  • Support Students by communicating with caregivers and community support systems

  • Refer students and their families to appropriate community agencies and services.

  • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators and others concerning the needs of students and special services that are available.

  • Assist with public awareness activities that lead to a better understanding of the needs of exceptional children.

  • Make classroom presentations to promote social and emotional wellbeing.

  • Cooperate with agencies serving students and their families.

  • Support Students by performing administrative duties

  • Order and maintain an adequate inventory of materials and supplies.

  • Maintain appropriate confidential records and provide timely reports.

  • Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas, and techniques.

  • See that school district policies are observed during all activities.

  • Obtain prior approval for all special activities and expenditures.

  • Adhere to all district health and safety policies.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or Director of Student Services which are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations regarding student discipline, bullying, sexual harassment, etc.

  • Knowledge of student behavior management techniques.

  • Knowledge of dispute resolution techniques and ability to engage in dispute resolution.

  • Knowledge of student support services provided by outside agencies.
    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's and Master’s Degree in an accredited college or university.

  • Valid Indiana Certification as a School Social Worker.

  • 3 years’ experience as a teacher, preferably at the appropriate level.

  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.

  • The qualities desired beyond the minimum certification requirements are:

    • training or willingness to be trained in positive behavior intervention skills;

    • demonstrated knowledge of student and family support services available in the surrounding areas.

    • demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with others, both with those of greater and lesser responsibility and authority;

    • evidence of high educational and professional standards;

    • demonstrated loyalty to the administration and other staff where presently employed;

    • evidence of commitment to professional growth;

    • evidence of professional work habits and conduct consistent with the ethics of the profession and appropriate character qualities.
      PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to lift 25 lbs.

  • Ability to carry 25 lbs.

  • Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.

  • Ability to see for the purpose of reading laws and codes, rules and policies and other printed material.

  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.

  • Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation.

  • Ability to operate office equipment.

  • Ability to reach in all directions.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    • 184 days per year
