REPORT TO: Lead Ophthalmic Technician
JOB SUMMARY: Busy Eye Care Family Practice in Livingston Parish is looking for an Ophthalmic Tech/Assistant to add to our team. If you would like to work chair side with patients assisting the doctor in providing excellent eye care health, demonstrate strong communication, positive interpersonal skills as well as a passion for people of all ages, please send your resume’.
Must be well organized, attentive to detail and take direction from others.
Position requires a motivated, outgoing and compassionate personality.
OCT, Visual Field, Digital Photography skills a plus.
Experience preferred but would be willing to train the right candidate.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma; some college preferred.
  • Two to five years experience as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant.
  • Valid proof of Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant.
  • Valid CPR certification.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Demonstrated, advanced comprehension of the ophthalmic assistant skills as outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) as well as a basic understanding of optics and the ability to perform refractometry.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Personable and empathetic with patient’s needs and concerns.
  • Well-organized with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Demonstrated comprehension of the principles of optics, refraction, and contact lenses.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform comprehensive work ups on three patients per hour.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Communication and Patient Care
  • Acquaint all new patients with office procedures to which they will be exposed. Inform patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how the patient will be affected during the tests.
  • Obtain patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.
  • Provide back-up to the ophthalmic photographer regarding fundus, exterior and anterior segment photographs.
  • Perform duties consistent with ophthalmic writer/scribe.
  • Assist physician with laser procedures.
  • Assist physician with minor surgery, maintaining practice standards of sterile technique and infection control.
  • Triage
  • Determine which patient should be taken next from the waiting room to have testing initiated. Escort all patients from the waiting room for data collection. Following testing, advise as to who will see them next and make patients comfortable during wait.
  • Maintain a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required.
  • Provide telephone support regarding ocular emergencies, prescription refills, and patient care questions.
  • Communicate with reception to facilitate proper patient flow.
  • Instrument Maintenance
  • Troubleshoot instruments as necessary.
  • Replace bulbs.
  • Check connections.
  • Perform archiving functions according to manufacturer recommendations.
  • Perform autoclaving and maintenance of instrument sterility.
  • Report continued difficulty to Lead Ophthalmic Technician.
  • Administrative
  • Seek advice from more senior staff as necessary, never performing beyond capabilities.
  • Confirm patients’ appointments by phone two business days in advance.
  • Maintain cleanliness in exam and procedure rooms.
  • Maintain back up levels of stock in exam and procedure rooms.
  • Perform other duties as required.

The Bond Eye Clinic, Inc. was established in October of 1996 in Amite, Louisiana by Dr. Richard Hunter Bond. In July of 1997, the Clinic was incorporated with the opening of a new location in Denham Springs, Louisiana. In February of 1999, the Clinic expanded by moving to a larger office in Amite, and a few years later, Dr. Daphne Richardson began seeing patients while maintaining her own private practice in New Orleans. Due to explosive growth of the business and community in the Denham Springs area, Dr. Bond moved the Denham Springs office to its current location on Veterans Blvd. The Clinic ... continued to expand with the opening of Bond-Wroten Eye Clinic and Surgery Center in Hammond, Louisiana in 2005, when Drs. Chris & Sarah Wroten joined the practice. Drs. Richard Bessent & Barbara Noguchi began providing services shortly thereafter. Dr. Adam Paddock joined the staff full-time in 2007, and Dr. Scott Nelson began providing services in 2008. Growth of the practice continued with construction of a new facility in Amite in 2009. After 14 years of proudly serving the residents of Tangipahoa, Livingston, East Baton Rouge and St. Helena Parishes, the Bond Eye Clinic, Inc. officially changed its name to Bond-Wroten Eye Clinic in 2010, and continues to grow while remaining committed to excellence in eyecare.
