The dental assistant works as part of the clinic provider team and assists the dentist in the provision of primary health care. The dental assistant provides limited direct patient services and performs specifically designated independent procedures.
Reports To: Dentist/Dental Director
Essential Functions:
1. Receives dental patients; prepares patients for examination including the identification of the chief complaint and ensures smooth patient flow.
2. Provides chair side assistance to dentist, assists the dentist in healthcare activities, performance of diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures, and the administration of medications as necessary.
3. Assists with stocking the exam rooms with needed supplies.
4. Assists in cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of dental instruments and equipment.
5. Taking, pouring, and trimming of impressions for diagnostic and opposing models.
6. Placement of wedging and removal of matrices.
7. Application of topical fluoride.
8. Checking bite with articulating paper.
9. Seating temporary crowns after of approval by dentist.
10. Administer and monitor nitrous oxide.
11. Expose and process dental radiographs.
12. Participates in the quality improvement activities within the clinic and performs duties in accordance with applicable standards.
13. Maintaining patient follow-ups after procedures.
14. Ensures an appropriate environment for the administration of healthcare by keeping exam rooms, dental lab, all equipment, and other work areas in a clean, safe and orderly fashion.
15. Schedule dental appointments with appropriate time allotments for procedures to maximize the dentist’s and hygienist’s schedules.
16. Confirm upcoming dental appointments for the dentist and hygienist.
17. Assist hygienist with 6-month recall program contacting patients via mail and/or telephone.
18. Patient chart maintenance – periodically review patients who have not been here in a while, contact patients to see if they have another provider or need to come in for cleaning/exam, etc.
19. Coordination of pre-authorizations as required with various insurance companies and Medicaid.
20. Coordination of maintenance and repairs of dental equipment as necessary.
21. Takes care of ordering all dental supplies.
22. Participates and encourages diversity and inclusion
23. Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge:
1. Knowledge of dental assistant practices and healthcare procedures.
2. Knowledgeable and qualified in Basic Life Support techniques.
Skills:
1. Skilled in exposing radiograph (periapical and panoramic) equipment.
2. Skilled in disinfection and sterilization of tools and equipment.
3. Skilled in using computer programs and applications.
Abilities:
1. Ability to communicate clearly in person and on the phone, establish/maintain cooperative relationships with patients, families, physicians, staff and other customers.
2. Ability to organize and prioritize tasks effectively.
