General Responsibilities:

The MA or LPN works as part of the clinic provider team and assists the Physician, Nurse Practitioner and/or Physician Assistant in the provision of primary health care. The MA or LPN provides limited direct patient services and performs specifically designated independent procedures.

Reports To: Director of Nursing/Assistant Director of Nursing/Charge Nurse

**Safety Sensitive**

Essential Functions:

1. Prepares patients for examination including the identification of the chief complaint, the taking of vital signs, height, weight, etc., and ensures smooth patient flow throughout the clinic.

2. Keeps ill patients comfortable until seen by a physician or nurse practitioner.

3. Assists physician and family nurse practitioner in health care activities, performance of diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures, and the administration of medications as necessary.

4. Conducts patient screening for hearing, sight, blood pressure, and other simple routine procedures and physicals.

5. In the absence of a laboratory technician, performs routine laboratory procedures, collects specimens, and prepares them for laboratory pick-up.

6. Maintains patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA regulations.

7. Assists with stocking the examining room and special treatment rooms with needed supplies.

8. Participates in the clinic’s quality improvement activities and performs duties in accordance with applicable standards.

9. Ensures an appropriate environment for the administration of healthcare by keeping exam rooms, nurses station, all equipment, and other work areas clean, safe, and orderly fashion.

10. Performs other necessary duties as required by the Nursing Supervisor to meet the goal of providing primary care services.

11. Properly document all information related to the patient visit within the electronic medical records system. This can include but is not limited to chief complaint, medications, blood pressure, weight, height, etc. Also responsible for properly documenting all phone calls including advice, patient refills, etc.

12. Supports initiatives such as Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) and Meaningful Use (MU).

13. Encourage inclusion and diversity within the organization

Education: Successful completion of an approved licensed practical nurse certificate program.

Requirements:

Current state LPN or MA license/certification

Must be qualified in Basic Life Support techniques.

Knowledge:

1. Knowledge of licensed practical nursing practices and regulations to assist physician and/or midlevel in providing patient care.

2. Knowledge of how to use medical equipment and instruments to assist physician and/or midlevel in providing patient care.

3. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to assist in establishing/maintaining a safe work environment.

Skills:

1. Skilled in applying the principles, methods and techniques of licensed practical nursing to assist physician and/or midlevel in providing ongoing patient care.

2. Skilled in preparing patients for examination by taking patient vital signs, height, weight, etc. to ensure smooth patient flow.

Abilities:

1. Ability to relate with warmth and effectiveness to the patients and to the providers of the clinic.

2. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

3. Ability to handle protected health information (PHI) in a manner consistent with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).

Experience: Previous clinical preferred but not required.
