Job Description:

The Education Department is hiring a part-time instructor to teach a 1-unit interdisciplinary course focused on physical health and education. This course serves Liberal Studies majors, who are primarily undergraduate teacher credentialing candidates. The course prepares candidates to teach physical education in K-12 schools.

Position Range: $2,160 per unit

Course Description

This course is required for Liberal Studies majors. Learn the methods for leading a physical education class for K-12 through the California State Curriculum Framework. Topics include movement skill and knowledge, self-image, personal development, and social development through rhythms, games, sports, and physical fitness activities. Participants in this course will receive a lettered grade.

Course Purpose and Objectives

The course is designed to address the following objectives:

  • Give candidates an overall view of the California Physical Education Framework,
  • Discuss cultural and gender issues corresponding with developmental characteristics of physical education,
  • Familiarize candidates with the basic principles of motor development in relation to the acquisition of fundamental skills,
  • Enable candidates obtain a practical familiarity with the developing characteristics of children/learners in K-8th grade, with reference to the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains,
  • Review lesson planning and class management,
  • Give candidates experience which will enable them to further develop effective teaching situations including how to teach sports, game strategies, rules and regulations, and
  • Continue to familiarize candidates with current and professional literature and resources.

In achieving the course objectives, the course addresses related California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) standards, required as part of the Elementary Subject Matter preparation program.

Spring semester, January 14-May 6, 2024
Tuesdays, 4-5PM
Location: Doheny Campus, near downtown Los Angeles
Cross-listed course with WEL 100; collaborates with Sports, Recreation, and Wellness
1-unit course

Requirements:

  • Applicants must hold a Masters Degree in Education, Kinesiology, or a related field.
  • Teaching experience in elementary, secondary, or higher education is expected.
  • Expertise in human development and sports/recreation is expected.
  • California Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential is preferred.
