Job Description:

The Division of Workforce Development at STCC seeks a collaborative and community-focused professional committed to lifelong learning, continuous improvement, removing barriers to academic success, and supporting the enrollment, persistence, completion, and transition of all students. The Advisor contributes to our diversity, inclusivity, and equity goals and supports all Workforce Development students (prospective, current alumni) across programs and funding sources. The Education and Career Advisor works collaboratively in a diverse, inclusive and student-centered environment, and with current and prospective students and staff of various learning styles, cultures, identities, and life-experiences.

The Education and Career Advisor will work closely with prospective or current students and alumni who have an interest in completing non-credit workforce training (adult basic education, HiSET/GED prep, ESOL, industry certification training, etc.) to ensure optimal academic success. The Advisor will facilitate individual and group advising, college and career events, and enrichment activities to ensure every program participant is provided with individualized and proactive support. The Education and Career Advisor will support all students with creating their education and career plan through assessing their interests to develop short-term and long-term flexible, culturally sensitive goals.

The Education and Career Advisor reports to the Director of Recruitment, Retention, and Transition.

Responsibilities:

* Provide high quality, proactive, and holistic advising to students experiencing barriers to success, including but not limited to: attendance, accommodations, computer access, housing, food insecurities, and makes referrals as needed.

* Establish and maintain face-to-face relationships with key staff in relevant community services and shares this information with staff and students.

* Build a welcoming environment and trusting relationships with students from point of contact through completion of the program.

* Advisor participates in intake and orientation to initially meet students; maintains regular contact throughout students' participation in the program; and follows up with students after program completion or after student exits program.

* Meet and greet students in flexible formats upon arrival, drop by classes, set up regular appointments with students and set up additional meetings as needed to set realistic goals and to help students evaluate their progress.

* Maintain complete and accurate student records, advising notes, attendance, outcomes, follow up data, assessment data, student moves and drops, shared customers, follow up calls, outcomes, returning student applications, etc. in a timely manner in program databases, files, and google documents.

* Share data in a timely way with program staff.

* Discuss and share attendance records, student contracts, and drop forms with students monthly and as needed.

* Meet regularly with teachers to share non-confidential case notes relevant to students' progress, including but not limited to: student needs, attendance, interventions, promotions, moves and drops.

* Develop opportunities for students to make connections within our program and within the college through events, guest speakers, activities, tours, student meetings, etc.

* Host events for new students: interviews, onboarding events, new student welcome event, introductory workshops, zoom access and practice and share schedules and placement information with new students and include returning students if needed.

* Support students with access to STCC email, computers, and other needs.

* Conduct follow-up calls and exit interviews. Arrange the return of materials and computers/technology with exited students. Manage and record data for exited students.

* Support assessment events including intake, practice, and benchmark assessments (i.e. Aztec, MAPT, HiSET, Workkeys) by organizing, scheduling, conducting assessment sessions and recording and reviewing scores with students, monitoring student readiness for assessments, and providing practice sessions in collaboration with instructors.

* Develop and maintain student assessment schedules and assessment documentation in order to meet program goals and fulfill funding requirements.

* Assist students in the process of creating necessary accounts to sign up for final assessments.

* Provide a series of workshops and individual support to develop short and long-term goals, college and career goals, learning strategies, tools for academic support and develop a college going culture and prepare students for success in the workplace.

* Conduct workshops on career exploration, goal setting, and job search activities including applications, interviewing, and other career-related topics as needed.Provide instructional support in the classrooms as needed (educational workshops in line with college and career pathways).

* Create and incorporate student education and career goals into contextualized curriculum by integrating advisor-led workshops in class, using the Integrated Career Awareness Guide lessons for job search, and inviting employers into class to share job and career awareness.

* Create and use college and career pathway curriculum: unit plans, lesson plans, syllabi, curriculum maps and other instructional support as needed.

* Collaborate with academic advisors at STCC to understand and support students with non-credit to credit pathways.

* Support the coordination of and participate in next step events through our Transition to College, STCC Career Center, STCC Open House events, STCC College Fairs, Workforce Development Center events and host MassHire Welcome events.

* Participate and support College for a Night, Division of Workforce Development graduation, and other student-focused events.

* Participate in meetings, orientation, information sessions, recruitment, program planning, curriculum development and program continuous improvement.

* Stays current on prevailing theories and research in the field of academic advising and participates in appropriate professional development.

* Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

* Bachelor's degree (Master's degree preferred) in counseling, education, or closely related field with two years of experience providing advising services to a diverse population.

* Proficient with data entry, Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.

* Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, work in a fast paced environment, demonstrate initiative and the ability to support staff and students where they are.

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills (Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred)

* Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Working environment inside classroom/office space. Normally seated, standing or walking at will. Light Physical exertion.

Additional Information:

Salary: $28.00 per hour. 8 to 10 week sessions up to 18.5 hours per week (Monday through Friday, day or evening) in line with the Workforce Development academic calendar, available funding, and need of the department. Individual schedule to be determined with the supervisor including evening meetings from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at least once a month on campus. Position based on STCC Campus although some travel to and from Professional Development opportunities may be available.
