Sizer School, now entering it's 20th year, is located in Fitchburg, MA in a new facility and draws from cities and towns in North Central Massachusetts, chartered to serve 400 students in grades 7-12. The school’s faculty and staff are some of the most dedicated professionals in Massachusetts public schools and do whatever it takes to ensure student achievement. The school boasts small class sizes, a safe and supportive learning environment, and students who outperform their peers from other area public schools. Sizer prides itself on creating a personalized learning plan for each student. Students enter Sizer as early as 7th grade and graduate well prepared for college or furthering their job training skills. Mission We are a public school where students are known personally, challenged intellectually, and participate actively. Guided by its commitment to diversity and inclusiveness, the school seeks to send graduates into the world who THINK for themselves, CARE about others, and ACT creatively and responsibly.
What is the Coalition of Essential Schools?
Essential Schools follow ten common principles that describe core beliefs, characteristics and a guiding philosophy. There is no one replicable model for essential schools. Essential Schools “are characterized by personalization, democracy, equity, intellectual vitality and excellence. CES practice is exemplified by small, personalized learning communities where teachers and students know each other well in a climate of trust, decency and high expectations for all. Modeling democratic practices with a strong commitment to equity, Essential schools work to create academic success for every student by sharing decision-making with all those affected by the school and explicitly confronting all forms of inequity. Essential schools focus on helping all students use their minds well through standards-aligned interdisciplinary studies, community-based “real-world” learning and performance-based assessment.” (essentialschools.org)
