Old Sturbridge Incorporated – Vice President of Finance

Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President of Finance serves as a key member of the senior leadership team at Old Sturbridge Incorporated (OSI). The VP of Finance is responsible for planning and oversight of Old Sturbridge Village Museum’s financial activities, as well as those of two public charter schools; Old Sturbridge Academy and Worcester Cultural Academy. All three institutions' total annual operating budgets are approximately $30 million. This role will work closely with the leadership team, Board Treasurers from each organization, colleagues across OSV and the charter schools, and the Finance, Audit, and Investment Committees of the Board of Trustees of each organization. 

The VP of Finance oversees all Finance, Treasury, and Accounting functions including, but not limited to, operating and capital budgets, annual audit, financial reporting systems, insurance, and tax-related information. In addition, the VP of Finance has oversight of the investment portfolio under the direction of the Investment Committee of the Board.

Additionally, the VP of Finance oversees the Information Technology group. 

Above all, the VP of Finance will be a proactive strategic partner with the leadership team in enabling institutional priorities through proactive and rigorous financial planning.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management

• Develop and implement financial strategies that support the organization’s mission and goals

• Manage and oversee all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis

• Ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial records, including the general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and other financial systems

• Prepare and present financial reports to the CEO and Board of Trustees, providing analysis and recommendations as needed

• Ensure compliance with all financial reporting and regulatory requirements, including tax filings, audits, and other reporting requirements

• Manage relationships with external partners, including banks, auditors, and other financial service providers

• Strengthen the capabilities of the Finance organization, through a combination of people development, retention, and recruiting efforts

Budgeting and Forecasting

• Direct, supervise, and improve the financial and budget planning processes to sustainably fund programs and operations, deliver on high-priority capital projects, and increase efficiency

• Monitor financial performance through clear and consistent metrics and measures of success. Advise on opportunities for revenue enhancement, cost efficiencies, process improvements, and related policy changes

Strategic Planning and Leadership

• Drive long-range financial planning initiatives to enable diversified revenue growth and a positive operating bottom line

• Working with senior leadership, continuously develop and recommend course-corrective actions to address emerging financial risks

• Provide financial leadership and support in the execution of the strategic plan

• Enable data-driven decision-making across all functions; help clarify links between departmental operations and the financial results of the organization

• Partner with department leadership teams in developing performance targets, monitoring performance, and creating remediation plans

Board Relations and Reporting

• Provide periodic updates on financial performance to staff to reinforce connections between departmental/ project budgets and the mission and strategic priorities

• Provide periodic updates and financial reporting to the Finance Committee of each of the Board of Trustees including operating results, emerging financial opportunities, risks, trends, and key performance metrics

• Engage the Board’s Finance Committees in review and approval of short- and long-term financial goals and related strategies

Tax Filing and Compliance

· Oversee banking, creditors, and debt, and uphold good relationships with banking partners.

· Coordinate, maintain, and monitor contracts, legal services, and insurance programs and maintain internal controls and ensure adherence to them.

· Coordinate the annual audit of financial statements and tax filings including the annual IRS Form 990

Qualifications and Requirements

The VP of Finance must be a skilled financial and operational leader and should share in the values and commitment to the mission. Additionally, for this position, we are looking for candidates who possess a combination of the following skills:

· Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or other quantitative or business-related discipline required; MBA/CPA preferred

· Experience at a cultural institution or other mission-driven non-profit organization or in the business management capacity of a charter school/district, preferred

· Minimum ten years of progressive experience in a senior-level financial management role

• Excellent analytical, verbal, and written communication, and presentation skills required

• Strong communicator with the ability to make financial information accessible and comprehensible to stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds. Must be able to connect finance to the mission and values.

• Strong executive presence and demonstrated ability to develop positive executive relationships. Experience working with governing boards and committees is helpful but not required

• Independent-minded individual willing to be candid with the leadership team and Boards in a professional and collaborative manner

• Strong work ethic along with effective leadership, management, team building, and supervisory skills; accustomed to working in a team-based/collaborative environment

• Able to operate with transparency and with the highest degree of ethics at all times

• Able to manage and develop financial talent within the organization

• Demonstrated ability to motivate, delegate, manage for accountability, and work effectively with staff and board to meet/exceed annual performance goals.
