SFMOMA is Hiring a Chief Financial Officer Near San Francisco, CA

Schedule: Full Time, 35 hours/week, approximately 3 days working onsite

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) provides strategic oversight of the financial, business, and compliance activities of SFMOMA in conformity with legal, regulatory, and established best practices. Reporting to and serving as a critical strategic business partner to the Museum Director and in close collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the museum, the CFO leads the development of short and long-range financial plans to achieve the strategic goals of financial health and long-term sustainability. The CFO serves as a member of the Executive Team and has responsibility in ensuring that the institution is fulfilling its mission in accordance with the strategic priorities and goals.

The CFO will be a strategic thinker and proven leader who builds on the successes of the current finance organization. The successful candidate will manifest the highest level of professionalism, stewardship, and integrity in executing the full breadth of the CFO role. Further, they will bring an authentic commitment to SFMOMA’s mission to connect people with the art of their time. The CFO will bring excellent leadership skills with the ability to make well-reasoned and timely decisions as part of a team and in the best interests of the organization for the present and future.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Provides financial leadership for the institution .
  • Oversees the development of SFMOMA’s annual and multi-year financial plans to ensure support of and adequation with the strategic vision of the institution. Monitors performance budgets. 
  • Provides regular finance updates to leadership, trustees, and staff.
  • Develops a deep understanding of the museum’s current operations. 
  • Manages external reporting requirements, annual audit, and tax filings.
  • Recommends appropriate policies and oversees internal control procedures to safeguard the assets of the Museum. 
  • Leads the preparation and integrity of the Museum’s financial statements and related reports and budgets. 
  • Leads the development, implementation, enforcement, and evaluation of financial policies, procedures, and processes that promote efficiencies, deliver timely and accurate outcomes, ensuring high quality internal and external customer service, and compliance with industry standards/regulations.
  • Oversees the management of the invested portfolio. 
  • Maintains accounting control over the Museum’s operating, restricted, board-designated, endowment and quasi-endowment funds. 
  • Oversee the accurate and timely development and presentation of financial analysis, multi-year plans and other scenario for management and Board of Trustees. 
  • Provides strategic leadership, management, mentorship, and oversight to the Finance Department, which comprises Accounting, Payroll, Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), Treasury Operations, Business Insights. The members of the Finance Department reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer include the Controller, the Director of FP&A and Treasury Operations, and the Head of Business Insights.
  • Engages and presents regularly to the Board of Directors (Board), Executive, Finance, Investment, and Audit Committees of the Board.
  • Serves as the staff liaison to the Finance Committee, the Audit Committee and the Investment Committee.
  • Serves on the museum’s staff-led Retirement Committee responsible for the strategic and financial oversight of participants’ invested retirement plans. 
  • Cultivates and manages relationships with partners, including donors, vendors, auditors, banking institutions, investment managers, etc. 
  • Participates in relevant professional organizations, working groups, conferences, and training opportunities to maintain awareness of key trends and best practices. 
  • Manages risk assessments and risk mitigation efforts. 
  • Manages relationships with external investment advisors.
  • Maintains appropriate internal controls. 
  • Establishes financial objectives across the museum divisions for each year and advising on progress. 
  • Represents SFMOMA at museum functions. 
  • Attracts and retains excellent talent to the Finance division. 
Qualifications & Skills
  • Advanced degree in Finance or equivalent experience. CPA highly desirable 
  • A minimum of 10 (ten) or more years of financial management experience.
  • A minimum of five (5) or more years of people management experience. 
  • Experience as a leader in the nonprofit sector, preferable. 
  • Experience leading during times of exciting and important change. 
  • Recognized as a leader with high integrity and thoughtful decision-making. 
  • Successful track record of driving innovation and implementing process improvements to increase efficiency and effectiveness. 
  • Ability to provide executive leadership across the organization, leading and mentoring high-performing individuals and teams, and supporting the vision, mission, and priorities of SFMOMA. 
  • Analytic, and systems thinking abilities. Able to identify complex issue essentials, delve under symptoms to find root causes, and analyze matters from multiple perspectives.
  • Demonstrated negotiation skills, including the ability to analyze complex situations and create positive outcomes for the business and the team.
  • Must be able to manage priorities in a dynamic environment and adapt to change quickly and positively.
  • Must demonstrate ability to be self-directed, as well as demonstrate excellent organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to work as a team member with peers, other managers, staff and senior leadership.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders 
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills. 
  • Ability to effectively interface with staff, senior executives, and the Board.
