Founded in 1987, Damien Center is Indiana's oldest and largest AIDS service organization (ASO) and serves more than 8000 individuals living with or at risk for HIV through a comprehensive, innovative approach to care and prevention. Our services include care coordination, clinical and pharmacy services, mental health, housing, and nutrition.

Position Summary:

The HIV/STD Tester and Counselor works under the HOLA Program, which serves LatinX men who have sex with men (MSM). This position provides pre and post-test counseling, conducts HIV/STD testing and outreach, client education, and collects and documents the appropriate data. The position makes referrals to the Damien Cares clinic, supportive services, and the PrEP team when appropriate. Must have strong customer service and organizational skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This job description describes the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this position. It should not be construed as an exhaustive list of all required duties, responsibilities, and skills.

  • Provides rapid HIV/STD testing, as well as pre and post testing counseling.
  • Facilitate linkage to HIV care for individuals who test positive for HIV.
  • Participates in outreach strategies for HIV/STD testing that engage the highest risk individuals from the focus population.
  • Builds relationships with community partnerships to expand testing to the focus population. This includes the coordination and scheduling of testing events outside Damien Center in venues such as nightclubs, bars, bathhouses, and motels.
  • Available to work non-traditional hours (including nights and weekends) for testing and outreach as needed.
  • Drive the Damien Center mobile unit to different venues for testing events.
  • Provides direct crisis intervention services when appropriate.
  • Documents and maintains client records including entering data in appropriate systems.
  • Prepares reports as requested.
  • Directly collaborates and coordinates with all prevention programming to assure individuals who test negative but are at high risk receive referrals to the PrEP program.
  • Participates in evaluative and quality assurance activities and maintains professional accountability to the agency, funders, and clients served.
  • Ensure the achievement of grant deliverables.
  • Provides resources, consultation, and training on HIV/STD prevention as needed to staff and clients.
  • Participates in health fairs, community events and agency speaking events to provide education and knowledge about HIV/STD and services of The Damien Center.
  • Performs special assignments and other work, including translation for Spanish speaking clients on an as-needed basis.

Education and/or Experience

Experience with HIV testing and/or community outreach is preferred but not required. Bilingual in Spanish/ English is required for this position. Valid driver's license required. This position requires driving the Damien Center mobile unit for testing events in the community.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Possess superior organizational and administrative skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities. Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment. Ability to work independently and achieve high standards of productivity, achieving deadlines and with superior product results. Strong calendaring, organizational, and document management skills required. Proactive approach to solving problems and communicating to leadership. Knowledge of office management systems, procedures, and office equipment required. Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize work.
