GAPABA Trinh Huynh Litigation Fellow

About Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta

Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta is the first nonprofit legal advocacy organization dedicated to protecting the civil rights of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander (AANHPI) and Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian (AMEMSA) communities in Georgia and the Southeast. We envision a social movement in which communities of color are fully empowered, active in civic life, and working together to promote equity, fair treatment, and self determination for all.

Founded in 2010 as the Asian American Legal Advocacy Center (AALAC), our organization became part of the Asian Americans Advancing Justice affiliation in 2014. Since then, we have organized our work into four major strategies: Policy Advocacy, Organizing & Civic Engagement, Impact Litigation, and Legal Services.

About The Litigation Team

Grounded in values of anti-racism, equity, and the liberation of all people, the Litigation Department engages in litigation, advocacy, and intersectional movement-building to advance justice for immigrant communities, combat voter suppression, and disrupt systems and structures that uphold immigrant detention and other forms of mass imprisonment.

Position Summary:

The Georgia Asian Pacific American Bar Association (GAPABA) Trinh Huynh Litigation Fellow will work in the Impact Litigation Department and will participate in litigation and advocacy, mainly in the areas of immigrant justice and voting rights. The Litigation Fellow will collaborate closely with other departments within Advancing Justice-Atlanta, particularly the Policy, Civic Engagement & Organizing, and Communications Departments.

How You’ll Contribute to Our Impact:

  • Assist the Litigation Director and Staff Attorneys with all aspects of litigation and advocacy, including investigation, client communication, legal research and writing, pleadings, discovery, and other litigation and advocacy tasks.

  • Conduct legal research and writing about policies that impact immigrant communities and/or voting rights, particularly during elections and the state legislative session.

  • Support community organizing and education activities and federal, state, and local policy advocacy. May include preparing community education materials, legislative research and writing, and public presentations.

  • Assist with election protection activities, including but not limited to creating/updating training and educational materials for voters and volunteers, assisting with the voter hotline on election days, and assisting staff and external partners with legal questions about voting/elections.

  • Assist with public communications, including press releases and social media.

  • Occasionally travel outside of the metro-Atlanta area to engage in litigation and advocacy activities, such as outreach, in other parts of Georgia or the U.S.

What You’ll Bring to the Team:

  • Excellent legal research and writing skills.

  • J.D. from an accredited university.

  • 0-3 years of experience.
  • Membership in good standing or awaiting bar results in any U.S. state or District of Columbia, with a preference for licensure in Georgia; or eligible and willing to take the Georgia Bar Exam and become a member of the Georgia Bar.

  • Local to the Atlanta area, with access to reliable transportation. The position permits working remotely but requires travel, as necessary, to the Advancing Justice-Atlanta office and to other local meetings and events, as well as occasional travel to other parts of the state (for example, to visit clients detained at Folkston ICE Processing Center or the Stewart ICE Detention Center.) Precautions are in place to ensure safe access to the office.

  • A sincere desire to work in partnership with communities of color and immigrants to protect and advocate for their rights and a commitment to Advancing Justice-Atlanta’s mission.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with a diverse client population and community members.

  • Be a highly motivated self-starter with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a small team in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.

  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and a positive, professional attitude.

  • Work with integrity and be reliable; look for ways to improve and monitor work to ensure quality; meet deadlines; and ensure that work responsibilities are covered when absent.

  • Prior experience working with/ties to low-income communities of color and/or immigrant or refugee communities, including incarcerated populations, preferred.

  • Some experience in voting rights litigation or advocacy preferred.

  • Bilingual/multilingual abilities preferred, particularly Asian languages and/or Spanish.

Why You’re Excited About Us:

  • Impact: We are building the power for good in the South, and your contributions will matter

  • Growth: We are invested in growing your leadership within the organization and beyond.

  • Our Team: We are a group of talented, passionate, and dedicated people who love our community and care about cultivating meaning, authenticity, and joy in our work.
