Alvarado Parkway Institute (API) is a free-standing psychiatric hospital in La Mesa, California with three Intensive Outpatient/Partial Hospitalization Programs. Alvarado Parkway Institute (API) provides comprehensive adult inpatient behavioral health and addictive disorders services in a 66-bed hospital setting located in La Mesa, California. Alvarado Parkway Institute in La Mesa is San Diego County's leading provider of comprehensive mental health and substance abuse care. API offers a variety of Outpatient Services designed to assist patients in functioning at the highest level. API provides Partial Hospitalization services and Intensive Outpatient services. These programs emphasize symptom management, community integration, and prevention of hospitalization or re-hospitalization. Value-added services enhance the patient's treatment experience.

Transcribe and proofread all confidential transcribed reports for thoroughness and completeness. Maintain an up-to-date Transcription Log book which accurately reflects performance and productivity. Carries out other departmental functions and provides assistance and back-up for co-workers as assigned and deemed necessary. 

  • Create accurate written versions of audio recordings.
  • Review and edit transcriptions; identify any inconsistencies.
  • Understanding clinician specifications and noting any formatting or notation requests prior to completing the transcription. 
  • Completing transcriptions in a timely manner and reviewing drafts for any spelling, grammar, or formatting errors, as well as other inconsistencies.
  • Adhering to all confidential guidelines and respecting sensitive information.
  • Keeping up-to-date of transcription software updates and attending refresher workshops as required.
  • Communicating with the clinician or supervisor when there are issues.
  • Submitting completed reports into the Electronic Health Record and correcting any errors found.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge of/Skills In:

  • Knowledge of computer software systems utilized for transcription.
  • Ability to type 80 words per minute with an average of 750-1000 lines per shift for Part-Time / Per Diem, 1200 to 1500 lines for full time. 
  • Ability to focus and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent phone skills and strong verbal skills
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and some diagnostic terms and treatment modalities
  • Some knowledge of medical record keeping
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, evaluative and time management skills
  • Policy interpretation skills
  • Familiarity with applicable standards and regulations of confidentiality
  • Able to comprehend psychiatric evaluations, consultations, lab results, etc
  • Responsiveness to deadlines
  • Assertiveness and persistence

 Requirements/Preferred

  • High school graduation required. 
  • One year experience and/or a Transcription Certificate preferred.

 Environment

The API employee is expected to behave in a professional manner, contributing to and promoting an inclusive and collaborative environment in which all are treated with courtesy, respect, and dignity. The healthcare setting requires that API employees support an environment of safety through adhering to infection control principles, prompt identification/mitigation/ reporting of safety concerns to their supervisor and adhering to all workplace safety requirements and policies.

Physical Demands

 While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Able to push and pull up to 20lbs. Able to speak, write, type and understand the English language. Ability to engage in physical activities with the patient’s including outdoor games. All API Healthcare/Clinical/Direct Care employees and those who work in patient care areas: Standing for long periods of time, bending, kneeling, lifting (within capabilities), twisting, carrying (within capabilities). Ability to talk, listen, hear, and verbally respond to comments directed to the employee. Must be able to participate without limitations in Code Green situations.

Travel (If applicable)Travel is primarily local during the business day.

Background/Reference Check & Licensure/Certification

  • Completion of a satisfactory background and reference checks.
  • Employee signed employment non-compete/confidentiality agreement
  • Individuals whose position may require licensure, registration or certification must maintain such as current and valid. It is the employee's responsibility to send updated copies to Human Resources before the expiration date. It is the employee's responsibility to notify Human Resources of any changes or proposed changes in status to licensure, registration, or certification. Failure to do so could result in employee suspension.

Covid-19 and Flu Vaccinations; Medical

  • Provide a copy of COVID-19 Vaccination OR have Exemption Request (Deferred Pregnancy, Medical, or Religious) approved by the API HR Director; and those who have an approved Exemption must undergo weekly COVID-19 testing and observe all other infection control requirements, including face coverings.
  • Annual Flu vaccination is required as a condition of hire and ongoing employment. Only those who are allergic to the vaccine or meet contraindications as indicated on the current CDC Vaccine Information Statement shall be exempt from this condition of hire and ongoing employment but are required to wear a mask while inside an APIU owned or operated building or vehicle during influenza season, Employees must provide physician documentation to support any reported allergy or contraindication. Flu season typically runs between November and March.
  • Pass drug and alcohol test
  • Clear TB skin test or Chest X-Ray at East County Urgent Care
  • Complete a satisfactory physical examination at East County Urgent Care designed solely to determine your ability to perform the duties of the position being offered.
