The Waterbury YMCA is currently seeking a Controller to join our team!

Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Controller at the Greater Waterbury Y creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while supporting the CFO in carrying out the monthly reconciliation of accounting records, bookkeeping, and control budget management while adhering to organizational policies and ensuring compliance with GAAP. This position will be responsible for grant reporting, grant management, bank reconciliations, financial statements, and supervision of the IT department for the Greater Waterbury YMCA and associate organizations.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university within accounting, finance, or related field and 2 years of related experience are preferred.
  • Knowledge of general ledger and accounting functions preferred.
  • Experience in data entry with working knowledge of spreadsheets and word processing.
  • Proficient in MS Office programs.
  • Strong customer service, communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.

Essential Functions

Grant Reporting and Management

  • Manage all aspects of grant accounting, reporting, and compliance, ensuring that expenses are aligned with grant agreements and budgets.
  • Collaborate with the Development department with the preparation of proposals and grant applications, including budget development.
  • Prepare and submit accurate and timely grant financial reports to funders, ensuring compliance with each grant’s specific requirements.
  • Collaborate with program managers to track grant spending and provide guidance on budget modifications as necessary.
  • Oversee grant audits and ensure proper documentation for all grant-related expenses.
  • Monitor cash flow related to grants and ensure timely disbursement of funds and reimbursements from funders
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, particularly as they pertain to nonprofit and grant-funded activities

Information Technology Project Manager

  • Oversee the maintenance and support of the company’s IT infrastructure, including servers, networks, workstations, and software applications.
  • Ensure system security, data integrity, and network stability through regular monitoring and proactive updates.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting for hardware, software, and network-related problems.
  • Coordinate tasks, prioritize workloads, and ensure timely completion of projects.
  • Assist in developing and enforce IT policies, best practices, and operational procedures to ensure compliance and efficiency.

Financial Reporting and Management

  • Support the monthly close of the general ledger utilizing appropriate agency financial software.
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations and prepare necessary journal entries.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements.
  • Assists with creation of annual budget for all organizations and monitors budget to actual results with department directors.
  • Coordinates monthly pre-close meetings with department directors.
  • Maintain and reconcile asset schedules.
  • Assist in the annual audit process and coordinate with external auditors.
  • Manage and improve internal controls to safeguard the organization’s assets.
  • Assists the CFO with developing and maintaining processes and procedures to ensure that the organization meets mandatory federal, state, and local law, regulation, and other contractual compliance obligations that are applicable to federal, state and local grants/contracts
  • Responds to inquiries; and works with the senior management team to implement and maintain best practice operations.
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and individually.
  • Assists with developing, facilitating and updating comprehensive policies and procedures, guidelines and forms related to federal and state procurement procedures.
  • Works on special projects and initiatives as determined by CFO.
