Utility Worker 1 is the entry-level class. Initially under direct supervision, incumbents learn & perform a variety of semi-skilled / skilled duties in the construction, maintenance & repair of the water distribution systems & related facilities. This position is alternately staffed with Utility Worker II, & incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience & demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications for the higher-level class.
Minimum Requirements:
-High school diploma or GED; proof or transcripts will be required
-Eighteen (18) years of age
-No experience necessary this employer is willing to train qualified candidate
-Have or obtain Water Distribution 1 certification after one (1) year of on-the-job training
-Valid Oregon driver's license to drive company vehicles to service areas
Preferred (not required):
-Prior experience in maintenance / repair, construction or related field
Job Duties:
-Performs skilled / semi-skilled work in the construction, installation, repair & maintenance of water distribution system mains, service lines & related facilities / equipment.
-Operation of motorized vehicles / equipment, including trucks, track-hoes & related equipment
-Understand & follow the tools, methods, techniques, & safety practices used in maintaining water distribution facilities
-Shop & field arithmetic methods, techniques & safety precautions necessary to meet the requirements of the position
-Perform skilled tasks in the maintenance of water distribution
-Operate the tools & equipment common to utility construction & maintenance
-Follow & carry out oral / written instructions
-Work from rough sketches, blueprints & diagrams
-Use independent judgment & exercise initiative in daily work activities
-Estimate necessary equipment & materials to complete work assignments & deal effectively with the public; respond to complaints / inquiries
-Any other duties as assigned

Pay / Benefits:
-$17 to $23 per hour depending on experience
-Sick pay, retirement plan & paid vacation
-Employees become eligible for a $500 health stipend after 90 days of employment; the stipend may be used at their discretion
