Requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen and minimum age 21
- High school diploma or GED
- Pass or provide proof of Police Office Selection test with a minimum score of 70 points
- Valid driver's license
Special Qualifications:
- Possession of/or ability to obtain DPSST (Dept. of Public Safety Standards and Training) certification within one year of employment
- Clean, acceptable driving record that qualifies per the County's vehicle policy
Preferred:
- Experience with communication and serving the public
- Law enforcement terminology and technology
- Knowledge of the methods used in the care and custody of prisoners
Job Duties:
- Patrol an area in a patrol car on assignment for the purpose of observing the area for possible criminal activity or other conditions that could endanger public safety, investigating complaints, and enforcing laws; maintains high visibility
- Investigate and report accidents, dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights, or other hazardous conditions
- Investigate crimes, interview witnesses, complainants, and victims; gathers physical evidence and preserves for court; conducts follow up investigations as needed
- Enforce all felony and misdemeanor laws
- Apprehend, arrest and detain criminal suspects and law violators when necessary; follows proper procedures when making arrest
- Serve warrants, summons, subpoenas, civil and other official papers
- Serve as witness in court and provides evidence in court as required
- Respond to emergency calls and practice safety procedures in answering and responding to calls
- Check residential and commercial property for security as requested; check on Senior Citizens as requested
- Assist motorists in various situations as needed
- Investigate and report fires or other related events; keep bystanders out of danger; safeguard property; and render first aid in emergency situations
- Prepare, process and/or transmit various reports as required
- Record information concerning events that took place during tour of duty and records such activity in the manner as prescribed by the Office
- Maintain weapons and equipment in functional and presentable condition
- Account for and transport evidence coming into custody
- Answer questions asked by the general public, work with juveniles and adults in related matters; refers public to person or agencies which can provide further assistance as required
- Work under stressful, high-risk conditions
- Take decisions at the crime scenes which may be centered around life or death situations; decisions are based on the safest procedures to be followed to ensure safety to individuals involved and fellow officers/members of rescue team
- Perform special projects as directed by the Sheriff
- Watch for wanted or missing person and lost children; administers first aid to the injured in emergency cases; report stray animals as necessary
