Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency consists of staff dedicated to serving others, which include professionalism, empathy, respect, excellent client service, maintaining confidentiality, punctuality with regular attendance. We provide assistance to low to moderate income families to help address their most critical needs. The agency has over 70 programs, including valuable educational, housing, and emergency services.
Internship Description:
- Wayne Metro seeks a motivated and engaging individual with an interest in working with children and families. This internship provides hands-on experience across afterschool, family engagement, and adult education programming, offering a well-rounded introduction to careers serving school-age youth, families, and adult learners. The ideal candidate will support daily program activities, assist with student engagement and instruction, and contribute to program operations, while gaining exposure to multiple service areas across the organization.
Interns Essential Functions:
Program Facilitation & Student Engagement (30%)
- Implement pre-planned lesson activities and lead engaging group sessions for students
- Plan and facilitate enrichment activities aligned with program goals and student interests
- Provide one-on-one and small group support to students to reinforce learning and participation
- Practice active supervision to ensure student safety, engagement, and positive behavior
- Build positive relationships with students to support a safe and inclusive program environment
Family Engagement & Support (25%)
- Communicate with families to provide updates and support student success
- Connect families to internal programs and resources as appropriate
- Plan and implement a family engagement event centered around student learning and participation
Program Operations & Compliance (25%)
- Assist with grant-related compliance tasks, including tracking and submitting attendance
- Support program documentation, reporting, and data entry requirements
- Create flyers and materials to promote program activities and events
- Assist with general program organization and administrative tasks
Adult Education Exposure & Support (20%)
- Observe and support adult education programming, including ESL and GED classes
- Assist instructors by working with adult learners in small groups or one-on-one settings
- Gain exposure to instructional strategies and program structure in adult education
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This job operates in a professional office environment with a usually quiet noise level. This is largely a sedentary role and the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, frequently use hands and to talk or hear.
Qualifications:
Qualified candidates:
- Currently pursuing a degree in Education, Social Work, Human Services, or a related field
- Passionate about working with families and supporting student development
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skill
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment
- Experience working with youth or in educational settings is a plus
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma/general education degree (GED) OR a combination of education and experience that is similarly equivalent.
- Pass Criminal Background check & Drug Screening
- Ability to work a hybrid schedule
