Warren Averett Staffing and Recruiting is seeking a Chief Operating Officer for an established orthopedic physician group in Birmingham, AL. The ideal candidate will have previous responsibility of reporting to the Board for the overall operation of the organization, including clinical operations, ancillary services, staffing, facilities, and operational excellence while driving continuous improvement across a complex, multi-site healthcare organization.
Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership
- Lead and optimize day-to-day operations across all Southlake Orthopaedics locations and service lines, including clinic operations, imaging, therapy, and ancillary services.
- Establish operational standards, workflows, and KPIs that improve access, throughput, patient satisfaction, and provider efficiency.
- Drive consistency and best practices across sites while respecting physician autonomy and clinical excellence.
Operational Execution and Growth
- Partner with the CEO and physician leadership to execute initiatives, including practice growth, service line expansion, and new programs.
- Evaluate operational readiness for growth opportunities such as new locations, expanded specialties, or partnerships.
- Lead integration and optimization of new services, technologies, or care models.
Physician & Clinical Partnership
- Serve as a trusted operational partner to physicians, department leaders, and practice administrators.
- Support physician productivity and satisfaction by removing operational barriers and improving clinic workflows.
Financial & Revenue Cycle Oversight
- Oversee operational budgets, cost controls, and margin improvement initiatives in collaboration with finance leadership.
- Ensure strong performance of front-end revenue cycle functions, including scheduling, registration, charge entry, and upfront collections.
- Identify operational inefficiencies, cost savings, implement solutions that improve workflow and financial outcomes without compromising care quality.
People, Culture & Infrastructure
- Implement, develop, lead and retain high-performing operational leaders (team leads) and teams across clinical and administrative functions.
- Ensure efficient staffing models aligned with patient demand, physician schedules, and service mix.
- Promote a patient-first, service-oriented culture aligned with Southlake’s mission and values.
Compliance, Quality & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with all applicable healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and payer requirements.
- Partner with clinical leadership to support quality initiatives, patient safety, and risk mitigation.
- Oversee policies, procedures, and internal accountability that support operational integrity and regulatory readiness.
- Oversee technology implementations, such as practice management/EMR conversion, AI support functions, technology compliance adherence, etc.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field.
- 10 years of progressive healthcare operations leadership experience, preferably within orthopaedics, multi-specialty practices, or physician-led organizations.
- Proven success leading multi-site operations and complex service lines.
- Strong understanding of ambulatory healthcare operations, revenue cycle management, and regulatory compliance.
- Proven ability to organize, develop, and lead efficient teams to handle daily operations of practice.
- Master’s degree (MBA, MHA, or equivalent).
- Experience working closely with physician owners or governing boards.
- Modernizing Medicine experience, preferred.
- Familiarity with therapy services, imaging, or musculoskeletal care models.
- Track record of driving operational improvement, growth, and scalability in a healthcare environment.
