What are the responsibilities and job description for the Communal Library Specialist position at Walker River Paiute Tribe?
DEFINITION:
The Communal Library Specialist (referred to as Specialist) will play a significant role in building the Walker River Tribal Library program, providing a safe community space for public use, creating access to technology, including free high-speed Wi-Fi access, access to free workshops, access to connections on virtual and in-person sessions, enhancing children's reading skills through attainable reading material and group activities related to cultural ties, and providing more social interaction skills in the community. The Specialist will develop a list of books/digital resources to populate the library and gain community interest with direct and indirect feedback from community members. The Specialist creates an open-door avenue for patrons to enter the library space for assistance, resources, and guidance on tracking the information needed for their personal and professional endeavors. The Specialist will also network and communicate with other tribal, state, and federal agencies focused on supporting local libraries. Literacy enhancement ideas can include facilitating book clubs, reference searches, job hunting tips, homework/tutoring resources, language/cultural learning of the Great Basin Tribes, storytelling/puppet making, poetry slams, Zine-making, and creating audiobooks/e-books/podcasts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
· With oversight and guidance from the Education Director, the Specialist will plan and develop all aspects of the operations of the Walker River Tribal Library program. The Specialist will work with the Education Department staff for support in programmatic structures and interests from existing data of local students and families
· Assist in developing policies and rules/regulations for the library
· Catalog and inventory all incoming resource materials received at the library
· Coordinate with the Education programs and other tribal departments, students, and the local community to provide resource materials available in the library
· Provide reading programs and literacy advancement, including topics related to education/career advancement, throughout the year for both adults and children
· Create and maintain effective circulation systems for materials loaned to and returned from patrons who utilize the library
· Conduct yearly inventories and maintain shelf lists of reading materials. Eliminate obsolete materials when necessary
· Order library furnishings and supplies
· Participate in meetings, conferences, and or training relative to supporting library services
· Willing to travel to different locations for networking i.e., public/school libraries, workshops, conferences, etc.
· Provide support with other department initiatives, special events, and community outreach
· Ensures the technology and learning center office space, library/tech space, storage space, etc. are all clean, disinfected, and well-organized. Must enforce all safety regulations or guidelines that are issued by the Walker River Paiute Tribe
· Other duties as required

· The duties of this job include physical activities such as stooping, kneeling, sitting, standing, reaching, walking, lifting, and/or moving (up to 50 pounds) and repetitive motions.
· The duties of this job include working in a public office setting. Attentiveness to patrons will be highly expected.
· Remain in a stationary position at a workstation and use a computer.
· Collaboration with staff through meetings, training, conferences, and program outreaches.
· Ability to drive library cargo donations to/from the main library location
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
· Must have at least one year working in a library or museum system or college classes; or have a high interest in working within a tribal library program
· Must be familiar with or strongly willing to learn a standard library filing system (Dewey Decimal System), including cataloging and inventory of resource materials
· Must have basic knowledge of computers and possess a minimum of skills needed to operate simple software
· Applicant must demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and work independently with minimal supervision
· Knowledge of Native American Resources or cultural materials

- Excellent organizational, time-management, and communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills, a must
- Knowledge of Grant writing a plus
Qualifications, education, and experience required:
· High School Diploma or GED equivalent
· This position requires that the candidate be a mandated reporter
· Must be able to possess a valid Nevada Driver's License and must be able and remain insurable under Tribe's insurance.
· Must successfully pass a background check
· Must pass a pre-employment drug test and random testing
