Position Summary
Responsible for the setup, operation, and in-process inspection of CNC vertical and horizontal machining centers. Ensures precision-machined components meet engineering specifications while maintaining efficiency, quality, and process consistency.
Key Responsibilities
Production & Operations
- Set up CNC VMC and HMC machines per drawings and job requirements
- Select and install cutting tools (end mills, drills, taps, reamers, etc.)
- Design and set up workholding (vises, clamps, fixtures, tombstones)
- Input, verify, and edit CNC programs (Fanuc, Siemens, Haas, Mazak, etc.)
- Set offsets (G54-G59), tool lengths, and cutter compensation
- Perform first-article runs and adjust programs/offsets for conformance
- Monitor in-process dimensions and adjust for tool wear and variation
- Execute efficient job changeovers and maintain setup documentation
- Interpret engineering drawings and GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
- Perform inspections using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, height gauges, and CMM
- Verify surface finish and thread quality
- Identify non-conformance and support corrective actions
- Maintain records (setup sheets, SPC charts, inspection reports)
- Programming & Process Improvement
- Edit or write CNC programs at the machine or via CAM software
- Optimize tooling, fixturing, and cycle times to improve efficiency
- Support new job setups and process development
- Document setups, tooling lists, and program revisions
- Perform preventive maintenance (coolant, lubrication, cleaning)
- Monitor machine performance and report issues
- Maintain 5S standards and organized work area
- Follow safety protocols including PPE, LOTO, and machine guarding
- Participate in lean and continuous improvement initiatives
- 3 years of CNC machining setup experience (VMC/HMC)
- Ability to read engineering drawings and GD&T
- Strong knowledge of G-code programming and editing
- Experience with workholding methods and fixture setup
- Understanding of cutting tools, speeds/feeds, and tool life management
- Proficiency with precision measuring tools (micrometers, CMM, etc.)
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple setups
- Experience with Haas, Mazak, DMG MORI, Okuma, or Doosan machines
- Familiarity with CAM software (Mastercam, Fusion 360, etc.)
- Experience with 4-axis/5-axis machining and complex setups
- Knowledge of advanced coolant systems and machining processes
- Background in machining precision components (gears, shafts, housings)
- Apprenticeship or degree in CNC machining/manufacturing
- Exposure to SPC, APQP, or PPAP processes
- Manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, fluids, and machinery
- Standing for extended periods; lifting up to 50 lbs
- PPE required; possible overtime/weekend work
- Hourly pay: $22 - $30/hr (DOE) shift differential
