Horizontal Boring Mill Machinist
Overview
The Horizontal Boring Mill Machinist is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining horizontal boring mill equipment to produce precision components according to specifications. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to ensure accuracy in large or complex machining setups.
Key Responsibilities
- Review job packets to understand setups, specifications, and machining requirements.
- Set up jobs on horizontal boring mills, including clamps, shims, wedges, and other tooling required to secure workpieces.
- Identify, locate, and load materials using cranes, forklifts, and other lifting equipment.
- Load CNC programs and verify accuracy through test runs or by monitoring operations.
- Write basic programs and make edits to CAM-generated programs as needed.
- Continuously monitor machine performance to ensure proper speeds, feeds, and part accuracy.
- Improve machining processes by documenting and implementing more efficient methods in tooling, setups, programming, and positioning.
- Deburr, clean, and finish machined parts to meet quality standards.
- Unload finished components and ensure proper flow to the next work center.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and clean work environment.
- Report machine issues, tool wear, or consumable shortages to management.
Required Skills
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
- Proficiency with measurement tools including micrometers, calipers, and tape measures.
- Solid mathematical understanding, including algebra and geometry.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety.
Qualifications
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving abilities.
- Preferably 1 year of experience or completion of a related trade school program (not required).
