CU Boulder is hiring for a Temporary Radiation Safety Specialist! This position supports the Boulder and Colorado Springs campuses as part of the Radiation Safety group to ensure University compliance with applicable radiation safety regulations. The Radiation Safety program supports the safe use of radioactive materials on the Boulder and Colorado Springs Campuses and in compliance with the University’s Broad-Scope Radioactive Materials License issued through the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment in agreement with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

Who We Are

Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) provides comprehensive safety oversight, training, compliance assurance and hazardous material management/disposal services to all campus operations (research, general fund operations, auxiliary operations, events, etc.). We coordinate with University Risk Management regarding campus safety liabilities/risks and develop programs to proactively address issues; develop and implement occupational safety programs that work to reduce risk management liabilities and claims, and coordinate responses to critical campus incidents and ensure appropriate hazard mitigation and remediation for hazardous materials incidents in full compliance with local, federal, and/or state regulations.

Responsibilities

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Support Radiation Safety Office to ensure compliance with University Broad-Scope Radioactive Materials License allowing the use of ionizing radiation in research and academic uses on Boulder and Colorado Springs campuses.
  • Assist with writing and updating program procedures and guidance documents, ensuring compliance with current regulations and communicate hazard risk and safety information to campus personnel working with ionizing radiation.
  • Assist with analysis of wipe tests and providing accurate results and invoices to external customers under Rate-Based Service Agreement.
  • Perform surveys to assess contamination of the Environmental Health and Safety Center laboratories using unsealed radionuclides, equipment previously used with radiation and exit surveys of laboratories being decommissioned.
  • Keep radioactive waste processing and storage area clean and organized, ensuring adequate supplies are available for normal use and emergency response.
  • Clean, perform contamination surveys on, and set up radioactive waste containers for reuse by campus laboratories.
  • Provide administrative support in the form of data entry, filing, and scanning of documents for the Radiation Safety Program, as well as answering phone and email inquiries.
  • Assist with pickup of radioactive waste on the Boulder and Colorado Springs campuses according to state and federal regulations. Sort and compact solid waste into drums for offsite shipment or to hold-for-decay. Work closely with CU Hazardous Materials Program to dispose of decayed mixed waste. Assist with preparation for and transfer of waste to vendor for offsite shipments.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and repair of Liquid Scintillation Counters (LSCs) to ensure each Department has an LSC available for laboratories needing one for analysis of experimental results and contamination survey compliance.
  • Help with pickup and return of survey instruments from campus laboratories for required calibrations.
  • Assist with receipt and delivery of radioisotope to campus laboratories daily, ensuring compliance with US DOT and NRC regulations. Track radioisotope inventory by PI to ensure accurate and current records for all radioisotopes on hand and to ensure license limits are not exceeded.
  • Assist with periodic inventory of unsealed radionuclides received on Boulder and Colorado Springs campuses with paper records kept by laboratories reflecting radiation use and decay.
  • Take contamination surveys of, deface radioactive markings and properly dispose/recycle packaging materials for radionuclide packages received following delivery to campus laboratories.
  • Provide transportation for researchers needing to move radioactive samples or sources from one campus building to another, with prior approval.
  • Ensure records are updated accurately in database system and SciShield.

What You Should Know

This in-person position has an anticipated work schedule of Monday through Friday during regular business hours. This role is expected to last for about a year in a temporary capacity.

What We Can Offer

The pay rate for this role is $26.50 per hour.

What We Require

  • Bachelors degree in Environmental Health, Physics, Engineering, or similar hard science or related field. Relevant professional experience can substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with PI's and researchers around radioactive and hazardous materials.

What We Would Like You To Have

Bachelor or Masters degree in a Radiation or Nuclear related field.
