Position Information

Under the mission of the UC Natural Reserves System (https://ucnrs.org/) and direction of the Resident Director: maintain, improve and protect facilities, natural landscapes and systems that benefit and support on-going research and teaching programs at the scenic and biologically rich 9000-acre Granite Mountains Desert Research Center (GMDRC). This critical position will oversee aspects of facilities maintenance and lands stewardship, while also assisting other staff with operations related to teaching and research programs. Core duties include maintenance of structures, utilities, vehicles, roads, trails, fences, and other infrastructure. Located 80 miles from the nearest town, and 180 miles northeast of Riverside, staff housing is provided at the Center. Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. The full salary range for the Building Maintenance Worker SR is $24.13 - $31.84 per hour. However, the expected salary range is up to $31.13 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs. Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff. As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time.  Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.

Demonstrated experience using hand tools, power tools (including table saws, drills and compressors), and equipment (including tractors, hitch trailers, concrete mixers) appropriate for general maintenance and construction of buildings and grounds

A minimum of two years construction experience with hands-on experience in multiple construction related trades including carpentry (framing, roofing, drywall, etc.), plumbing (e.g, water and propane lines), electrical, welding, masonry, and basic vehicle maintenance and repair; and knowledge and understanding of California building codes, as well as hazardous materials and general safety policies.

Minimum Requirements

  • Willing to work variable hours, including holidays and weekends; live in remote location in rustic conditions; may drive long distances and occasionally working long days to attend training, meetings, or to get needed materials and supplies. Must be on-call when necessary to respond to emergencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct physical labor outdoors in desert environment/wilderness setting (including snow, rain and excessive heat conditions). Ability to hike several miles over rugged terrain and lift minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Basic computer skills including use of Windows or Macintosh operating systems. Ability to operate email, word processing and use of spreadsheets software. Proven ability to organize, file, prioritize, manage time, write clearly, and interact well with supervisors, colleagues, and reserve users.
  • Able to anticipate and identify potential health and safety hazards; and willingness to confront and communicate effectively, and safely, to trespassers.
  • Able to become sufficiently familiar with GMDRC operating procedures in order to manage the reserve in the absence of directors and other administrative personnel.
  • Ability to learn and interpret to visitors the basic natural history of the reserve, including the names of plants, animals, geological formations. Become familiar with regional places, roads and history of the reserve and surrounding region.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of state and federal agencies and regulatory policies that apply to research and land management issues, and general knowledge of conservation issues in relation to reserve management.
