The University of Alabama at Birmingham Police and Public Safety Department seeks Police Officers to serve as the first line responding sworn department member for accomplishing the department’s mission and goals as they pertain to protection of life and property, the provision of patient healthcare services in the hospital, and the provision of all other services required by UAB and the department. Interacts with the public, fellow officers and outside agencies in the performance of duties. Uses various software such as Microsoft Windows, Excel, and other applications specific to police operations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Protects life and property through the enforcement of laws and regulations; Proactively patrols assigned areas.
- Responds to calls for police service.
- Conducts preliminary and follow-up criminal and traffic investigations.
- Conducts interviews.
- Prepared written reports and field notes of investigations and patrol activities.
- Emergency duties required during adverse weather conditions.
- Operate law enforcement vehicle under emergency conditions day or night.
- Commanding emergency personnel at accident emergencies and disasters
- Takes an active role in Community Oriented Policing on campus.
- Self – initiate traffic and/or criminal investigations.
- Testifies in court.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or GED
- Must be at least twenty-one years of age.
- Must have a valid driver’s license from the state of Alabama.
- Before receiving APOSTC certification, candidates who do not hold an associate degree or higher must complete the Alabama Basic Skills test.
- Candidates who are not certified must obtain certification from an authorized APOSTC Academy.
- The Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) certification is required.
