Job Title

Temporary Assistant Water Resources Specialist I with a Work with a large, mission-driven public agency that supports essential water, environmental, and infrastructure services for a major metropolitan region

Location

San Jose, CA (Onsite)

Assignment Details

Duration: 960 Hours in a fiscal year
Work Schedule: Part-Time: 20-40 hrs per week

Role Overview

The Assistant Water Resources Specialist I is an entry‐level professional role that provides scientific and technical support for District water supply management and environmental/stream stewardship programs. The position operates under close supervision, following established procedures while learning to apply water resources, environmental, engineering, and scientific principles. As experience grows, assignments become more varied with increasing independence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support water resources, environmental, and watershed programs through technical research, analysis, and documentation
  • Assist with development, testing, and implementation of water resources databases and applications (e.g., SMP programs)
  • Draft requirements, execute test plans, and help develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Assist in preparation and review of regulatory and program reports, including:
    • Notice of Proposed Work (NPW)
    • Annual Summary Reports (ASR)
  • Support water quality monitoring, sediment testing, reuse, and disposal coordination
  • Assist with database administration, including integration with asset management systems
  • Collect, analyze, and summarize environmental, scientific, and technical data
  • Prepare technical correspondence and reports
  • Support compliance with federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations
  • Collaborate with engineers, scientists, and program staff to improve program efficiency
  • Participate in meetings with internal staff and external stakeholders as needed .

Required Experience

Required:

  • No prior professional experience required
  • This classification is designed for new graduates or early‐career professionals entering the water resources field.


Preferred:

  • Exposure to or familiarity with:
    • Water resources management or watershed programs
    • Environmental compliance or water quality monitoring
    • Databases, GIS, or cloud‐based systems
    • Technical or scientific data analysis
  • Internship, academic projects, or temporary assignments related to water, environmental science, engineering, or natural resources are beneficial

Required Skills

Technical Skills

  • Understanding of water resources management, environmental sciences, hydrology, geology, or related fields
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and summarize technical and scientific data
  • Basic knowledge of:
    • State and federal environmental laws and regulations
    • Water quality, groundwater, and natural resource principles
  • Proficiency with:
    • Microsoft Office and general computer applications
    • Databases and data management tools
  • GIS familiarity preferred
  • Ability to learn and use specialized software and modeling tools.

Education / Certifications

Education (Required):

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four‐year college or university with major coursework in:
    • Water Resources Management
    • Natural Resources Management
    • Environmental or Civil Engineering
    • Geology, Hydrology, Earth Sciences, Physical Sciences, or related natural science fields.


Certifications / Licenses:

  • Valid California Driver's License may be required if driving is an essential job function
  • No professional license or certification required at the Assistant I level.
