Job Title
Temporary Student Intern with a Work with a large, mission-driven public agency that supports essential water, environmental, and infrastructure services for a major metropolitan region
Location
San Jose, CA (Onsite)
Assignment Details
Duration: 960 Hours in a fiscal year
Work Schedule: Part-Time: 18-20 hrs per week

Role Overview
This role is designed for a student intern with an interest in Civil Engineering to support in-house engineering teams on capital construction projects. The intern will gain hands-on exposure to construction management practices, project documentation, and field activities related to civil infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the review of engineering drawings and specifications.
- Support construction field activities, including:
- Site observations
- Documentation
- Coordination with construction inspectors
- Help organize and maintain contract documentation, including:
- Requests for Information (RFIs)
- Submittals
- Change orders
- As-built drawings
- Other project records
- Attend construction meetings and prepare meeting notes.
- Provide general administrative and technical support to the construction management team as needed.
Required Experience
Required:
- Currently enrolled as a student intern pursuing studies in an engineering-related field.
- Ability to perform site visits at active construction sites and comply with safety requirements.
- Basic exposure to or understanding of engineering and construction concepts through coursework.
Preferred:
- Academic or practical exposure to:
- Construction management practices
- Capital infrastructure projects
- Contract administration processes
- Prior internship, coursework projects, or lab work related to civil or environmental engineering is beneficial but not mandatory.

Technical Skills
- Basic understanding of civil engineering principles, including:
- Construction materials
- Construction methods
- Industry terminology
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, drawings, and specifications.
- Familiarity with standard computer and office software applications.
- Basic analytical skills to identify discrepancies or issues during construction observations.
- Understanding of construction documentation processes (RFIs, submittals, change orders).
Soft Skills:
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills.
- Good attention to detail, especially in documentation and site observations.
- Willingness to learn and collaborate with engineers, inspectors, and project teams.
- Ability to follow safety protocols and use personal protective equipment (PPE).
Education / Certifications
Education (Required):
- Pursuing a degree in one of the following fields:
- Civil Engineering
- Environmental Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- No certifications are required for this intern role.
