Commercial Underwriter

A well‑established, privately held insurance organization is seeking a P&C Contract Binding Authority Underwriter to join its specialty commercial underwriting division. This role focuses on evaluating and underwriting small‑to‑mid‑market commercial risks within delegated binding authority guidelines, with a strong emphasis on New York real estate and contracting classes.

The ideal candidate brings technical underwriting expertise, strong broker relationships, and the ability to manage a profitable book with discipline and autonomy.

Key Responsibilities

Underwrite and manage a dedicated book of New York binding authority business, with emphasis on real estate and contracting risks.

Evaluate new and renewal submissions, analyze loss history and operational exposures, and determine eligibility and pricing within delegated authority.

Negotiate terms, conditions, and pricing with retail agents while maintaining underwriting discipline.

Ensure compliance with carrier guidelines, internal standards, and regulatory requirements.

Maintain strong relationships with agents and internal teams to support profitable growth.

Contribute to portfolio performance through sound risk selection and proactive account management.

Qualifications

2 years of commercial P&C underwriting experience, preferably within binding authority or E&S environments.

Strong understanding of New York commercial risk, especially real estate and contracting.

Ability to work independently, make confident underwriting decisions, and manage a growing book.

Excellent communication, analytical, and negotiation skills.

Proficiency with underwriting systems and rating tools.

Compensation & Work Environment

Base Salary: $65,000–$85,000

Annual Bonus Eligible

100% Remote (Hybrid option available for candidates near Huntington, NY)
